Just watched "Dallas Buyer's Club."
It was ok. Had no idea it dealt with HIV/AIDS. Thought it was a drug flick. Similar to all the rest of the "AIDS/HIV in the 80s" movies. The best will always be the adaptation of Randy Shilts' "And The Band Played On" with Alan Alda. It's weird, because the stories have really pretty much all been told. What would have been a shocking and daring movie in, say, 1995 is rather stale and played out by 2013.
I mean...I grew up in the SF Bay Area. While I didn't know anyone personally with HIV/AIDS (that I knew of) until the late 90s, it was an inescapable part of the culture that it wouldn't have been in, say, Dallas. It was a regular part of the news there in the 80s to 90s, until AZT combo therapy became popular in 1995...? 1996...?
It was a fine movie, with fine performances...but it just felt really...old? Been there, done that? Had someone made this movie in 1995, I think it would have been a very bold statement, and would have won all the major awards. And I think that's a shame.
But McConaughey's performance was stellar, and Leto did well, too.

I just watched this last night. Did you like it? I did. The interviews were great. Now I want to read his stories again.

Child's Play (2019). Very well done remake, better than the original IMO.

Has anyone seen this piece of rubbish...?
Mandy (2018)
It's awful. What the hell has happened to Nicolas Cage?!

Just watched Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Wish I had seen it in the theater. Just a bad decision on my part. It was to be expected, with the usual plot holes endemic to the series, but...I do love the characters.
It's weird that what started out as a playful children's book in the late 90s, by a homeless mum (hi Bats!) for her kids, turned out to be such a dark, worldwide phenomenon.
Not high art, to be sure, but certainly not bad. The score, by Desplant, is stunning. I wish he'd used more of the John Williams themes, but all in all, a very well done work.

I just watched Deathly Hallows Part 2, and I have some things to say... but I can't quite seem to gather all my thoughts about it, just yet.
Watching it has oddly affected me, in a way that is unexpected, for reasons both related and not to the film and the series.
I'll try to get something worth reading together in a bit.

Watched some early Bond films and they are pretty meh, to be honest. I thought the best one so far was the You Only Live Twice. The lone Lazenby movie was surprisingly good but the ending was dumb. I'm on Diamond Are Forever right now.

Also watched the first three Friday the 13th movies and these were also pretty whatever. The plot of all three is basically the same. How did this franchise ever attain the success and popularity that it did? They aren't even particularly scary.
