1st graded copy just showed up on the census.9.2. probably the 3rd known copy. I'm relating to the Superman 50. This topic got way off course.

I wouldn't assume that it is probably the third copy found. The first verified 2nd print newsstand of this book was found by the OP, of this thread....which if you look closely at the scan.... If the wear present on the FC of OrganicSquishee/RMA's copy pictured on page 1 of this thread, is consistent with how the BC looks, I can see how it would catch a 9.2 after being dry cleaned & pressed. By consistent, I mean no stains, corner folds/creases etc.

This is not RMA's copy. He said on the CGC website he won't grade his.

This is not RMA's copy. He said on the CGC website he won't grade his. I remember RMA posted that he had no plans for slabbing the book , but I do not remember him posting that he would "never" slab it.

I Know who has the book. It was supposed to show up at the NY comicon. Don't know if it made it back in time from CGC.

He didn't answer but again, I know who has this book. It is NOT the OP. It has been at several shows since I originally posted about it. Unless he sells it in the next month, it will be at C2E2 on his wall. Probably the first really big show to be displayed at. I think it made the NY show only on the last day. I talked with the owner and he told me a few people know what it is and others are confused as to what they think is a $2 book on his wall. He told me that he has a great time explaining about the 2nd print newsstands and newsstand variations in general. If anyone is going to C2E2, walk around the show and try to spot the book. I forgot what his dealer name is (meaning the company his set up is under). I'm surprised this subject didn't get mentioned over at the CGC chat boards.

I hope he ended up educating people about it. The fact that things like this can be discovered, decades after the fact, and long into the era of the internet, is a wonderful thing.

Agreed- I don't personally care to see a barcode on a cover, but I oddly I like those diamond price boxes Marvel used even less. There were a few Marvel Direct Edition covers that had neither (i.e. Thor 385), which always confused me a little. If they can make a cover without a box in the corner or a Diamond for a price box, why don't they? How can anyone at MARVEL say the cover looks better with it? Anyway, while I'm unwilling to pay more for one or the other, I find the hunt for every type printed very interesting sometimes. I completely understand the appeal of personally finding a comic off the rack of a busy comic shop that manages a 9.8, but I often cringe and roll my eyes at the numbers some people pay for one or the other. Still, it isn't my money so I won't go AT someone with my opinion on the matter or what they should or shouldn't do. When someone is able to find those types printed very sparsely for cover price or less- Very cool.

I would guess that the reason for the Direct edition UPC boxes was to prevent artists from drawing in the space designed for the UPC.
It totally uglifies a book like Batman #442, but the UPC had to appear somewhere for the newsstands...and on the very rare occasions where there was no UPC box (Thor #385, Suicide Squad (1987) #1, etc.) I imagine it was because someone made an editorial decision after the fact (and, indeed, you can see the shadow of the UPC box on books like the aforementioned SS #1.)
I like the Direct UPC box for the most part, especially when creatively used (like ASM #302-up) BUT would, like you, have preferred it not be there at all if not strictly necessary.
