I agree with you. "Variants" like this book is a true variant and not a manufactured one. Be that as it may, that's not what a variant is defined as. Second prints can't be variants. And this whole second prints are worth more than first prints thing is just ignorance and greed. Anyone who will pay more for a second print only because the print run is smaller than the first print is just a greedy prick of misery. But...tell us how you really feel.

If I manage to find one of these, I'll have no compunctions about selling it to one of those "ignorant" collectors that want to pay a super-inflated price. I've got kids to feed, and 32 hrs a week at work barely pays the bills.

If you find one in FN or better condition, please send me a message and I would gladly pay $100 for it. I've already asked RockMyAmadeus and he isn't parting with his for now. Am I greedy?... definitely not. I've never speculated on variants. I just enjoy the hunt and the pride of ownership. I love the academic approach that RockMyAmadeus brings to collecting.

I wonder about this. Newshane on the CGC boards stated something similar in that only 1% of Image distribution was newsstand at that time, so with a million copy print run that would give us 10,000 newsstand copies. All my newsstand comics were Marvel, DC, and Archie, so I don't have any first hand accounts of distribution in my area. This is why I wish the census broke out the newsstand copies from the Direct.

Newshane is a pretty well informed poster but I would also say that he is pretty far off the mark with the 1:100 Spawn 1 newsstand to direct assertion. An eBay seller cranked out a $200 or so BIN for a Spawn 12 CGC 9.8 newsstand a while back. The sellers' pitch was that the book was printed in a 1:100 ratio. That is where the 1:100 newsstand claim originated for early issues of Spswn, I believe. Newsstand distribution was not nearly that low, in 1992-1994.MacFarlane was also uber popular at that so print runs on Spawn was pretty much in league with Batman,Uncanny X-Men and ASM.If not higher.

Any ballpark ideas as to what the direct vs. newsstand ratio was? There's no way to know. No one kept any records that are known. Perhaps Image has records on it, but it's doubtful. The only estimates are total guesses. The only thing that is certain...or seems to be certain...is that Direct editions far outnumber newsstands, at least until about 2000 or so. "1:100" isn't accurate, and presents a distorted picture of the situation, because of the incentive variants of the last decade+. You would be just as accurate to say "1:57" or "1:982" or "1:19,298." None of those is accurate, because they weren't made that way in the first place, and no one but the publisher and possibly Curtis (the newsstand distributor at the time) has any idea how many were made and how many were returned. There's just no way to know.

See where this newsstand crap has led? pathetic. X-51 I believe this to be the only cover used for newsstand distribution. I looked for others when it came out and this was the only one I saw after scouring many spinner racks. shrewbeer @x51 that's what I thought for a very long time, until I came across a magneto cover by chance! From there it was quite fun hunting them, and I eventually managed to find all in NM+. The beast cover was by far the most difficult to track. They currently reside in my CBCS submission pile (one of my "grails" is now a full 9.4+ newsstand set, hoping I have it!), I'll try to get some pics up later shrewbeer Here you go 🤗 This took some work to put together, and was one of my favorite hunts. Probably bought 17-20 books until I had a set that was satisfactory in grade, these were tough to find

And that's really a shame, because I was hoping for better. So, I wouldn't take anything they say seriously.

Well, at least he started with "I believe this to be..," and not "This is...".
