I'm a little surprised this thread has died down a little. Unless some posts were deleted by Russian intelligence. I'm always up for a debate, always amped up. But most people don't live in that world. I had dinner after a local con with a friend and a new person last night. We got to talking about comics and their place in history, and it got "debatey." Getting "debatey" is fine, but if people are getting offended at what you're saying, whether they have a right to be or not, then it quickly sours things, and leads to you being not invited much of the time. You become "that guy." Essentially, the guy (I had just met the guy yesterday) was upset because so and so said thus and such, and I said...quite rightly, I might add...that getting upset about what others think about you is a waste of time. He was, of course, offended by that, because, like most dopey millenials, he thinks that people shouldn't say those things at all, rather than taking responsibility for his own self and not worrying about what others think. ...and my friend, who I treasure, was not happy about the whole thing. Speaking for myself, I know that I'm "that guy", and it grates on people, so I try to dial it back quite a bit. |

Make no mistake, folks: worrying about what other people think of you is death.
That's not an invitation to cynically and callously disregard other people...not at all.
But being upset because someone didn't like something you said or did...or worse, altering your behavior to "fit in" and "not upset the apple cart"...is the path to destruction.
I tried to explain that last night, but it didn't get through.
"People shouldn't be tearing other people down!"
Granted.
But wasting precious life being upset about how people view you is the wrong way to go about it.

Exactly, if that time and effort went into learning what respect is and wanting THAT from people, things would be a hellva lot different Edit. This post was a LOT longer, but I'm sure you guys don't want to read for a half an hour the things I hate about people  |
