Frankly, just the few little things you did like changes to the shoutbox and moving a few things around all will clean things up. Hello! Not pushing aside your ideas, but something I want to mention (in comparing to the “old” days), is that such a structure wasn’t entirely needed. We met here like any regular group of folks would at your lcs on Sundays after closing(or wherever). The era wasn’t all that important. We came together as comic fans, albeit often different core interests, and marketplace topics were generally at the back burner. We appreciated and valued one another’s enthusiasm for the books, creators, and characters we loved. Kind of like a Venn diagram, and we all found a meeting point or common ground. Nothing wrong with a focus of sub-forums, but I’d think initial energy should go towards increased and consistent participation. Example: I don’t care much about Copper Age Wolverine or Doctor Strange, but if that’s your bag I’d enjoy reading about it, and why you love it. Hey buddy! That's why I qualified it as how I prefer it. If everyone else doesn't want it, no biggie. And I love your analogy about being in the comic book store. That's a great one. I did not think of it that way but that works. Great post!

To interject, I think this would be best addressed in a PM. Not speaking for Fiddy or anyone else. You can say it on here. I won't get offended. I totally own the fact that I pushed pretty hard with the Covid discussions. Mainly because the discussion NEEDED TO HAPPEN. I'm going to assume that for some, this was a big turn off. But what I don't understand is why having a Covid discussion in the community discussion section would take away from the comics discussions. I just avoid things I don't like and participate in things I do like. Pressuring people to talk or discuss only certain topics or worse, only certain sides of topics is how we got here in the first place. And to add one final point, if the forum is dead and nobody is posting here (which it was when I started posting heavily here) I'm going to assume people don't mind me filling the forum with discussion material. But if I see more posters posting here, I have no problem backing off and leaving real estate and space for the rest. Genuinely. Like I've said, I am going to personally put an effort into making this more of a community. Roy, the subject matter being discussed isn't anything you'd be aware of. This forum is 10 years old and has lots of history.

Spilling the beans: According to the Scholastic Dictionary of Idioms, by Marvin Terban, (via the Write Blog), this probably dates back to the ancient Greek method of placing black or white beans in a jar to cast votes. If someone spilled the jar of beans, the election results would be known prematurely.

I've said this before, but it seems it needs saying again. 1) I'm not asking you to change what you are interested in discussing at all. If you love politics, then discuss it. If you're not interested in comics, you don't have to discuss it here, it's no big deal. As long as you don't break the rules, you can discuss anything you like here. Bottom line...don't change your posting behavior unless you want to. Capiche? 2) It's my job to maintain this forum. Sometimes things have to be done to keep a balance. If I had a political forum and found that comic book posts outnumbered political posts 100 to 1, I'd have to make similar changes to balance the forum and make sure that political discussions would continue to survive. I've tried to include you guys in this process by letting you have a say in it as much as possible. Many forums would just do whatever is convenient. 3) Bigger means busier and that means more work. Do you really think I want to spend a lot of time working for free on an unmonetized comic book forum? Well, I don't. I'm not interested in creating a monster forum with thousands of people. If it happens, I'll find a way to deal with it (probably volunteers), but it's certainly not something I want. This forum already has a huge SEO ranking because of things I've done to ensure it over the last decade. Type "comic book forum" into Google and see what happens. This little forum is usually right near the top, even if you live in Australia. The bottom line is. if something is posted here, it gets read. Why? Because there are a lot of eyes watching this forum, and not just through this site. And this ranking is largely independent now, I don't need much traffic to maintain or even grow it. 4) All I really care about is having fun and interacting with a nice group of people from time to time when I'm not too busy.

I also temporarily turned off Guest Forum and Newbie Questions. We'll take a look at these when we get to the Shoutbox. Okay, so no one has mentioned these two...and they weren't being used except in the beginning...so I think I'll just get rid of them...especially since I saw how they were being misused.

Let's keep the shoutbox (cuz it can be fun at times), but eliminate guest participation. This will solve the abuse problems. I've said this before, but it's weird how the comic book crowd is so odd and doesn't play well with others. Vendettas and other acts of stupidity are common. In other hobby forums, the shoutbox is a major communication tool between noobs who are checking out the forum and forum regulars who are answering questions. It's literally never abused by anyone.
The shoutbox is currently in a single location on the navigation bar. I can set it back to being on every page, but most people like the way it is now better because it's less intrusive and busy. We can vote on it if you like, it doesn't matter to me.
