Hi everyone,
I'm still new to the board so I figure this must have been discussed somewhere here at some point. Forgive me if it has.
My question is in the title of the thread... why do YOU collect comics? Is it because you love reading the stories? Is it because you love the art and cover art? Is it just based on nostalgia? Is it for home display reasons?
Why do you collect?

My wife also wants to know Haha! For me, focusing on EC is okay with my wife because she loves all things horror. Branching out might need a little explaining.

I collect mainly to hold onto a piece of my youth. I LOVED the silver and bronze age Marvel, and a smidge of the copper age. IF some of them bring me extra money someday, I'll consider it a bonus, but my hope is to leave them to my grandchildren and/or my oldest nephew.

I think I'm predisposed to collect something, comics just won out over everything else. I find comics to be a great entertainment resource. I enjoy the stories, mythos, characters and art of multiple genres. I like the bit of history looking at an old comic gives me, imagining coming upon say, a Flash, Our Army At War, or Blondie comic in 1960 on the newsstand or spinner rack at the corner candy store and excitedly heading home to read the heroes adventures, the soldier's current dilemma, or Dagwood's folly. It's exciting to me to think about that sort of thing happening in any era before comics disappeared from the wider marketplace and settled into a neighborhood LCS, removing much of the intrigue and sense of discovery of a new comic book that existed for readers decades prior.
There's a nostalgic element of course. I remember the joy I felt when I first started buying my own comics in the 4th grade and watching the small piles of issues slowly turn into larger piles until I had a years worth of a title and would spread them on the living room floor to admire the covers and recall the stories inside. Looking at books I had as a kid takes me to a happy place, reading them even more so.

I still have 700 or so, but haven't bought anything new for myself since 2001-2002, and haven't bought anything in a few years.
So I am not actively collecting comics anymore, shall we say.

I love to read, and I wish I could draw but I can't; that's why I collect them. I don't think I'll ever stop getting comics every week, there's always something out there. Comics are my only collection/hobby, unless you count 300 CDs (no Steely Dan).

I think I'm pretty close to done collecting books, might collect art if I ever make enough disposable income.
Comics is so far out of the norm for me, I really don't know why I spent 3 years going really hard to collect what I did. I suppose it was nostalgia for me as well

I was the youngest of four and recall seeing, and 'reading', and then actually reading all kinds of comics from when I was very young, but what got me into collecting was reading X-Men 99 and seeing the preview box at the end for issue 100, promoting the battle between THE OLD TEAM VS. THE NEW TEAM!!!
Planted a seed, it did!
