I would never have known that was by Kirby. Very cool. Really? Looks pretty much like definitive Kirby (pre-70s) to me. Yeah, a give away for me is how he draws faces. Just looking at the body, and even the helmet, I couldn't tell.

Was Jack thinking a little about Modok when he introduced this character in Kamandi #9?

Byrne was a much better inker of his work than most. The great years were Byrne/Austin X-Men, I doubt many would disagree.
Kirby needed an inker who wouldn't change his stuff too much - Mike Royer was the best. But on FF, Joe Sinnott improved the work. Kirby was at his peak then too, but they were the perfect team for the FF. Both have suffered from some very bad inkers, Kirby had Coletta erasing half his work and adding his own lines (sometimes it worked though) and Byrne says he hated Bob Layton's inks. Ironically I think Sinnott's inking of Byrne (in that one FF story) didn't work at all.

One of the better known covers from Marvel in the '70's is Captain America #193, the start of Jack Kirby's run on this title upon his return from DC. The iconic pose of Cap would be used on notebooks, stickers, t-shirts, mouse pads, etc. in the years following.

Jazzy John was the inker, so the final brush strokes were certainly his.

Ironically I think Sinnott's inking of Byrne (in that one FF story) didn't work at all. Sinnott is a powerful inker and despite the adoration most people heap on him, he could alter pencils in a negative way. Whenever Sinnott inks anybody, you can tell. Rubenstein is the same way. Layton is also powerful. I think his style works well on most pencilers however. He can definitely elevate pencils as well. I seem to recall him being okay over Byrne. Sinnott over Byrne doesn't work, imo. I loved Byrne inking himself on FF in the early 80s. Great stuff

Compare the pencil page to the finished cover. It's obvious Romita redrew Cap's face. Check out the face of the Falcon and others in the background. It's all Kirby, except Cap's face. Marvel was known to do this.
