I need to move to Alaska... or maybe Buffalo, NY. I hear their summers aren't that hot nor that long. Maybe San Fran, but that's, y'know, California. FTR, I am still assured in my own thought that one day there will be a large earthquake and that Arizona will have some nice cliff-side sea views afterward. In Buffalo you'll boil in July and August. Winters last six months and you get "Lake effect" snow. I hope you like wings and pepperoni pizza. As Bats implied, the buses suck. The city is divided into zones, so there are routes where you pay when you get on and again when you get off. Cost of living is cheap. No, I boil here in NC every summer. Summer starts in May (sometimes April!) and lasts until late September. 90+% humidity during June, July, & August. I am American-born, but my heritage is Scots-Irish. I was made to live in a bog, not here in the near-tropics! Six months winters appeal to me. Here, we barely get winter, and rarely see snow. I keep my windows open even when it gets down to 40 or so outside at night. Lake-effect snow sounds like something I want to encounter, and maybe not get tired of. I saw thunder-snow & lightning in NYC & want to see that again. That weather sounds great! Who doesn't love wings & pizza? Only poors take buses, I'd rather ride a bicycle. Of course, that COL is what makes it. I have an internet buddy that lives there, he said the house next to his went up for sale at something like $30K. It was a 1600+ sq. foot ranch. $30K. He said it needed some TLC, but no major repairs. That's insane. The house I live in now is about that size, and it's appraised for taxes at something like $220,000. Then I remember seeing little bitty patches of earth out in Los Angeles that had a $500K price tag. WTF is wrong here??? Anyway, Buffalo can't be worse than Durham. That's all I am saying.

Slym,i've ridden the bus my whole life...why have a car in the city? As of now, and while I was in NYC, I don't own a car. But the buses in NYC were crap. The subway was where it's at.

Hot and getting hotter. Sunhats all round. It's going to be 24C/75F tomorrow... That's SPF 30 for me. If it reaches 30C/86F, it's SPF 50! God damn, are you a towhead as well as British? I had to google that. I'd go with "Celtic".

Snow loses it's appeal quickly when you are the only snow remover in your house, you have to drive in it, and enough of it causes your town/state/whatever to shut down.
Snow is for the young and those who like winter sports.

Back to mowing... That's what I gotta do on my second day off. There's something to be said for dry but overcast weather... The grass doesn't grow!

I never minded cutting grass when I had a yard. It was the other stuff like raking leaves, pruning bushes and trees, pulling weeds, etc.

I never minded cutting grass when I had a yard. It was the other stuff like raking leaves, pruning bushes and trees, pulling weeds, etc. I get to do all that. And what do I get for my troubles...? I just finished doing both gardens in this sweltering heat of 80F ( ) and I hear my wife calling... "Bruce!" she yells "BRUCE! Why is there an aquilegia in the garden waste?!" "Because it was growing out the patio and not the flowerbed..." I still got the look...

Mowing sucks but sucks even more when it's 90+ degrees and/or very humid
