I read a few of his posts and he seems a little bit bitter. I always imagined him being a happy dude.

Funny, was just going through Byrnes 'Next Men' books. I actually liked that series.

My favorite comic title, I always thought Byrnes run compared favorably to the Lee/Kirby days, through Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas, and Marv Wolfman. I find bright spots throughout those first 25 years(Doug Moench who preceded Byrne was good as well imo). I often hear younger fans grumble about the writing in SA, BA, or not liking Kirby’s art, etc., but I think those readers could develop an appreciation for the FF if all they ever read was Byrnes contribution.

Personally, FF #164-292 is my favorite run. A lot of people prefer to say that everything after Kirby, up until the beginning of the Byrne run was not the best, but I disagree. I grew up reading FF beginning with issue #164 or 165 so it was my starting point & I loved it!! Of course Kirby/Lee was also great, but I did not reference that material until a few years later in various reprinted form. As a person mainly attracted to art, I adored the Perez issues and the earlier Byrne issues before he started also writing. Also, the Keith Pollard issues, especially #200 which I feel is vastly underestimated & probably the greatest single FF issue EVER!!!

You picked a great starting point! Two of my favorite comics are #166 & 167 and the stories that continued in the aftermath of Ben reverting to human form and Power Man joining the group. I agree about #200 and the lead up containing some of the best stories and art of that era(FF or otherwise). I’m getting very backed up on my reading, but I should put the ‘75 to ‘78 years into my queue again.
