I don't know about Subby during the Golden Age, but he was beheaded in Squadron Supreme #1 not too long ago, but was brought back to life in #13 just before the series ended. You kind of have to give credit to the Mighty Marvel Marketing Machine as they knew readers would keep buying the series wanting to see how Namor would return. I think maybe people new to comics in the last decade or so somewhat expect this sort of storytelling. I miss the quality and creativity that from my perspective I saw in earlier eras, though.

Beheading seems rather brutal for Marvel and more like something Faust would do. I haven't read anything from Marvel for years and don't think I can get back into it considering how much has changed.

I have read very little recent Marvel, maybe the newest was Spiderman noir? But the Marvel Zombies was fantastically gory, and what Logan does to the Hulk at the tail end of Old Man... and that hole Thor blew through Black Goliath?whooooboy!

Of more recent vintage I recommend Mark Waid's runs on Daredevil volumes 3 & 4. Has a bit of a 60's comic vibe and I really enjoyed Chris Samnee's art on that title. There's some humor added and you won't get lost reading any of it, though best to start with #1 (2011).

I picked up some Daredevils recently just for speculation purposes. Flipping through the books it definitely had a darker vibe to it. I was a big fan of DD when I was younger so I may try out the series.
