Got a little local comic show next weekend at a nearby Elks Club. I used to love the little local shows back in the 90s!

Close, this one's going to be in Lynbrook on Hempstead Avenue. Looks like Mike Carbonaro will have a space, he's probably the de facto promoter. Did you used to go to Carbo's shows at the old church up on West 60th back in the 90s? And then later the Penn Hotel shows?

I picked up an ASM 1 at that show back then. I liked the Penn shows. My favorite shows though were the old RVC Holiday Inn (?) shows when you had Vincent, before there was a Metropolis, Ritchie, the guy from Elmont that I cannot remember right now among a lot of other guys. I have not decided if I will go next week or not. Lately I want to slim the collection down and not pick up stuff just for the sake of getting stuff. As much as it would be nice to go, I want to remove the temptation. I will probably make a last minute decision.

I guess that's part of the fun.
Did that show happen last year? I seem to remember it was later than usual and got cancelled, right?

They always felt like someone woke up late and was rushing to put it all together, but that was part of the charm of those shows. I started going to the ones held at the old church when the celebrities were all wrestlers and artist alley was Witchiepoo and whoever lived locally.
Then Mike started up at the Penn Hotel and things grew bigger, but not really better organized. If Alan wasn't there running things behind the scenes those shows would have folded after a few years but they kept chugging along. Not sure if there was a show last year or not actually.
I started volunteering for ACTOR and then Hero's Initiative at those shows and met many very nice creators over the years, many of whom gave freely of their time to help fellow artists in need. Danny Fingeroth, Jim Salicrup, Jim Steranko, Rich Buckler, Mark Texiera, Billy Tucci, Larry Lieber, Sean Chen, Jim Califore, so many I can't recall them all.
And there were always good booths at those shows, large and small - Bob Storms, Harley Yee, Motor City, Metropolis, TV Comics, on and on. One year CGC actually did on-site grading there - they cordoned off a block of rooms upstairs if I recall correctly.
I met Elvira there one year, so sweet and very attractive in her street clothes! David Carradine was there one year - he had the whole corner cordoned off with about 18 family members, they looked like a tribe of nomads!

When was that? It must have been early on before I started attending that show.

Yes, at the Penn show. It was long, long ago. I submitted a handful of comics and was amazed getting back my ASM 300 in 9.6 condition. It had a crimp on the spine that looked like it was caused by a roach clip!

I found it on the Big Apple Comic Con wiki page. There was CGC on site grading at the 3-day comic show on Nov. 19-21, 2004 at the Penn Pavilion, going under the name The National rather than Big Apple Comic Con (same promoters, location, etc.). I even found the comics I submitted and the grades I received (from the Valiantfans forums): Unity 0 red CGC 9.8 X-O 0 gold CGC 9.8 Bloodshot 0 gold CGC 9.6 Eternal Warrior 1 gold flat CGC 9.8 Psi-Lords 1 gold CGC 9.8 Spidey 298 CGC 9.8 Spidey 300 CGC 9.6

Ah, OK. My first time in NYC was 2009 so well before my time! You didn't know what you were missing - not talking about Comic Cons either! My first concert in NYC was at the Crackdown on Crack Concert at Madison Square Garden on Halloween night 1986. Check out this eclectic lineup -- The Allman Brothers Band Santana Olatunji Paul Butterfield Mick Taylor Felix Cavaliere Run DMC Ruben Blades Crosby, Stills and Nash

Was Ruben Blades MCing the event?
Funny story, I met him at a Philly show years ago and he gave me his cell number just because we both loved Pep #22. He was fun to talk to. He's a big time comic collector.
