The cover is taken from the 2nd Joker story in Batman 1. So yes he is. I know where it's "taken" from. However, the character on the cover does not look like the Joker AT ALL, and therefore, is NOT him. So, no, he isn't.

You're right, and the consensus of comic book historians is wrong. As usual.

You're right, and the consensus of comic book historians is wrong. As usual. The tongue-in-cheek nature of this thread, which this "palooka" dink clearly missed, aside.... I find it incredibly hilarious when people about me actually citing facts and data, because...you know... it's too much to read...and then think that "citing" a "consensus" serves as "proof" of whatever point they think they're trying to make. Who is this "consensus"? Why is a "consensus" somehow "proof"? Do you know what a "consensus" is..? Yeah, it's just a group of people who happen to agree. That's the fallacy of appeal to popularity; that is, if a group of people believe something, it MUST be true, because, after all...many people believe it. That's not proof. That's FAITH. Back to this particular issue: there's enough ambiguity in the "Joker" character for it to be reasonable questioned, even though this was taken from the Joker story in Batman #1. It has nothing to do with people being "right" or "wrong"..."as usual" or not...but rather the clearly AMBIGUOUS nature of the character that appears on THIS cover...which, you'll note, even CGC doesn't note it on the label. So, Palooka, why not stop being a bitter , and discuss it like an adult? I'm HAPPY to hash it out with you.

I thought that was the Joker, but without the face paint.

So who is being represented on the cover of Detective 40 that depicts the very same event that is takes place with the Joker in Batman 1? Mammy Yokum?

Translation, anyone...? In any event, to answer your question, that character is clearly Fish from Barney Miller.

I thought that was the Joker, but without the face paint. The Joker doesn't wear face paint. Arrghh! I know/knew that. I initially typed "whiteface", but that sounded weird to me. Also, the outfit looks more like something Inspector Luger would have worn in the 40's, not Phil Fish imo.

Why can't it be the Joker with white fleshtone face paint? Like in the Batman 1989 film.

Every time I see that cover, I think what on Earth is Robin doing out on that flagpole?! And Joker/Not Joker just so happened to be carrying an axe at the time Robin climbs out on to it...? Have you noticed the story panel is in reverse to the cover? Joker is right handed, Not Joker is left handed. Robin is on opposite sides of the pole etc. Maybe that's the explanation. It's an alternate Earth where everything is in reverse including Joker's colour scheme. Earth-R anyone...?
