There's an interesting conversation on CGC about this about con dealers, specifically as it relates to slabs.
To whit: "Why should I pay a dealer a markup over GPA just because I'm buying it in person?"
The arguments for the buyer:
1. You don't have to pay shipping.
2. You can examine the book in person, and reject it without additional costs.
3. No shipping means no risk of damage.
4. No hassling with returns or partial refunds, if necessary.
5. No waiting.
The arguments for the seller:
1. Conventions cost money to setup.
2. Slabs cost money to transport.
3. Instant sale, rather than having to ship.
The arguments against the buyer:
1. If I can get an identical item for $X, all in, why would I pay ANYONE $X+Y for it?
2. Getting the item to the buyer in the same condition it was sold in is the SELLER'S responsibility, not the BUYER'S.
3. "Waiting" isn't a problem for those with impulse control.
4. You don't have to pay the convention admission fee.
The arguments against the seller:
1. You don't have to pay eBay fees, which tend to cost MORE THAN convention set up fees, averaged out.
2. You have to transport it somewhere, whether it's to the con where you were going to set up anyways, or to the post office/your front door.

Essentially, and what I've never understood, is this: if I can buy Comic Book #X for $20 off eBay...why would I want to pay a dealer $40 for it, just to buy it in person?
"You can inspect it!"
Granted! Always a good thing! But if I buy off eBay, I can inspect it, too, when it arrives...and if it's not as described, I can get my money back. Hassle? Sure, but that doesn't justify the additional cost on what MIGHT be.
WHICH....I'll point out...is NOT an option if you'd paid a dealer cash for the books at a con, unless the dealer happens to be an honest person.
I've had SEVERAL books that turned out to be blatant ripoffs because I just didn't have the time to check everything, and I paid the con dealer in cash. They ripped me off as badly as anyone on eBay, and I have no recourse.
So you, the seller, have to pay fees to sell at a con. And? The buyer had to pay an admission price to the con, and the buyer had to pay for travel expenses, too.
In other words, these are all "sunk costs", that are already paid, regardless of whatever else happens.
No, if I were a dealer (and I have been occasionally), I would happily and gladly accept ANY offer in person that was GPA...knowing that I'm saving on shipping costs (because eBay REALLLLLLLLLY wants people to ship stuff "for free"), and eBay fees, which are substantial. I pay as much in eBay fees a month as a table at pretty much any regional con would cost.
I just shake my head at the dealers who sit there, running museums. No money from me!

So, any thoughts on this...? I prefer to buy unslabbed books. That way I can inspect the book. Slabbed books cannot be inspected or graded. I really don't care what grade someone else assigns to a book, especially when their grading criteria is secret and unpublished. Example: AF15 CGC 8.5There is a signature on the last page of this book, yet it isn't disclosed. I would want to know that before I purchased it.
