I really enjoyed Stephen King's The Stand. There was a little side story he did, explaining the lives of random people and just the sheer dumb luck that can happen. One instance was of a prude who went to shoot some innocent loud mouth guy, and the gun exploded in her hands. Another where a kid broke her leg and was doomed, and some other random ones that I can't remember. Given a catastrophe there are going to be a LOT of deaths from sheer stupidity. Then there will be more just out of sheer bad luck. When it comes to survival of the fittest, not always the cream rises to the top... Which is why Darwinian Survival of the fittest refers to those best suited to adapt to their environment and not necessarily those with esteemed traits. I'll play Devil's Advocate for a second and ask..."what's the difference?"

I'll play Devil's Advocate for a second and ask..."what's the difference?" Well, if we go by Mazlow then self-respect (the esteem needs) is the highest of the four more basic needs in order to reach for self-actualization. Modern psychology tends to stress things like personal growth, loving relationships, humility, truth, forgiveness, mindfulness, accountability, being present, etc. (generalizing). Adapting to a zombie apocalypse or other complete social breakdown may require adapting a more brutal, self-centered, xenophobic and unsympathetic view of others in order to survive. Which, I figure, is the theme of The Walking Dead. How do you not completely let go of the current standards of humanity and still survive. After all, the "walking dead" appellation applies to the living, not the zombies, if I read the story correctly (Rick actually states it at one point, I believe). That seems to be the central conflict.

Then you take in account of the many self absorbed, egotistical, maniacal maniacs already out there and they are the most likely to survive and propagate
