My uncle's nickname was Red so I'll go with that. There's a famous announcer from that time named Red Barber too.

The nickname given doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to it, other than the writer must have liked it. Edit: There was a well known announcer with the same nickname that was used by Archie in Pep #22 who passed away a few years ago now that I think of it. Nothing to do with hair color, height, weight, etc. |
