This was fantastic, much better than the Quaker brand oats I grew up eating as a kid. Going to have to get some cinnamon Once you go steel cut, you can never go back to rolled. BTW - steel cut is sometimes called 'Irish Oats.' I get it for $0.79/lb (organic) at Sprouts in the bulk section. I think Whole Foods is 2-3 times that price. If you buy it in the small containers at the supermarket, it's really expensive.

Got a large bag at Costco for $11. Should last me awhile. Gotta find some toppings now Used almonds this morning, was perfect. Maybe get some fresh blueberries or strawberries

My older sister turned me on to steel cut oats last summer. I really liked them. Your post compelled me to go out and buy some - had 'em for breakfast yesterday morning & making a pot of then right now. Good stuff - I like the choice of toppings in your example, the almonds & cranberries make for a great topping! Cheers!

I just finished a bowl a few minutes ago. Lately, I've been making them crunchier by using less water. I used 3/4 C Water to 1/2 C Oats. I go back and forth with the water, depending on what my available toppings are.

Finally got some cinnamon to try with this, but does the better half get powder? No. We have sticks. "Just grate it" she says. So sure, simple enough I think. Now, I am not a culinary person. I can cook meat and boil stuff to live, I was completely alone for over 5 years, and someone can only eat out so much. Learned enough to survive and enjoy a meal or two. I have never had previous experience with cinnamon. The sticks are like tree bark. If you want to grate them with your standard "all purpose grater", you know the one. It's got the cheese setting on one side, and the "fine" cheese setting on the other. On the other two sides is for, what I reckon, mangling your hands while you jam sticks of cinnamon rapidly against the fine grater side, hoping not to catch your knuckles. What the hell is that one side for anyways? Filing down concrete? Five minutes later and a 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, I'm eating my oats.

Get a nutmeg grater or a microplane grater. Or a mortar & pestle. Small electric coffee grinder? Finally, a good old-fashioned hammer with the sticks inside a double-layer of ziploc bags, covered with a towel is always therapeutic.

Mortar and pestle probably gives the greatest control over size/texture.

I'll just buy the ground stuff That's fine, but you are getting an inferior product. Just like pre-ground black pepper is nowhere near as good as fresh-ground, cinnamon is even moreso. Heck, most of what's in a can is actually cassia and not even really cinnamon. Either way, sticks are better. Wayyy better.

Steel cut oatmeal used to be my breakfast of choice. While not as fancy, I would throw a cup or so into a ceramic pot and throw it into the microwave for a minute, then stir and add more water if necessary and then put it back in for another minute. After that I would put a scoop of peanut butter on top of the oats and then let it sit while I did my morning routine. After about 10 minutes it was done with very little prep. The first time I made it with PB it took me by surprised because when I lifted the lid off the pot, the PB on top of the oats looked like diarrhea on gravel.

Sounds like it would be great with some strawberries or blueberries mixed in. Kind of an oatmeal-y PB&J vibe going.

I never thought about putting anything but PB with steel cut but damn, PBJ oatmeal sounds pretty good.

I like mine with blueberries, but I don't think I'll be trying PB anytime soon
