Baffled how this guy had a magnificent career. He's just so bad. I hope MJ had a good orthopedic surgeon to fix the incredible wrist fracture- Nothin like an artist that draws people 12 heads tall instead of the actual human 7-

Right artist for the time. In the late 80’s I was looking backwards in a sense, reading mostly small press, alternatives, & ug comix. The art didn’t bother me much at the time, nor do I suspect it did most people or Todd would have gotten more backlash earlier. I wasn’t around for Kirby’s move to DC and only recall rumblings about his art style from some upon his joining Marvel at the tail end of the 25 cent issues, but do you think had Kirby had stuck around contributing as prolifically as before he’d have been given the same lukewarm (or worse) reaction as his style was still pretty unique compared to his colleagues to my eyes?
Not a great comparison as Kirby was already established. Just wondering if it was simply a need for a new house-style artist and the coming generation liked Todd.

McFarlane brought a unique style that was a cross between animation and the traditional Marvel House style. I don’t believe it was a matter of the right artist for the time but the right artist for the right character at the time. Spiderman is a character that is best shown when perpetually in motion. The character is supposed to portray the experience of soaring and flipping though the air with the most agile of moves. At least to me, the best experiences of the character have been when he is racing around the city in seemingly zero degree gravity. That’s accomplished in animation with some push and pull type artistic style. McFarlane exaggerated poses that crossed over into that so to the casual viewer it was believable but fluid all at the same time. It was exciting and fresh and really made Spiderman “cool” for the time instead of looking like “everything else”. For the first real time on a consistent basis the character quite literally looked like he would jump across and off the page.

I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
