Hello Everyone,
I am a filmmaker out of LA and Toronto. I wanted an honest opinion, on something. I would love some honest opinions on a Clark Kent in a multi-verse where he is ethnic, and by ethnic I mean South Asian. Being an "Alien" from Krypton and an out-cast. Not an out cast in a total racist type of way, but just "out of place." I have an image, I will upload and would love to hear what you all would think?
Thank you

Thank you The 'ethnic super hero' has been done to death. If you are going to do one, make a new super hero dont turn an established hero ethnic as has been done with captain marvel, spiderman, iron man etc etc etc.

Zod is familiar with this Clark Kent - an alias used by the cur Kal-el on Earth. While Zod feels a Maleficent-style reconsideration of Krypton's greatest general is a better idea, he does have some thoughts for you. Foremost, if you have an inspiration, follow it. While Zod can foresee some possible roadblocks in terms of bringing such an idea to the screen, they are not relevant now. Keep in mind too that you're asking this question of a very specialized audience here, and that comic fans in general oppose alterations to characters they know and love as they are. This forum in particular skews VERY conservative both socially and politically (Zod himself is unaffiliated), and this adds another layer of resistance. But if your idea is well-executed and done in a thoughtful manner (not seeking to embrace diversity merely as a fad or novelty), there is every chance it will be well regarded outside of the preservationist world of the comic book purists who might gripe about it, particularly here. In a worst case scenario, if the preposterously extended copyrights on these DC characters do finally expire in a decade or so, your idea could be one of many fascinating re-imaginings of these characters to result. Best of luck, and looking forward to any images or other details you may choose to share. Regards, GZ

Kav,
Yes you are right! There has been many diverse characters. I, on the other hand would like to create a realistic approach to a Clark Kent that is diverse but makes sense. I want to create a story that is identifiable and have Clark Kent, agree with the audience. If the audience doesn't feel that "This Version" of Clark Kent is deserving of being Superman. That will be incorporated into the storyline. I want to create a version of Clark that people can empathize with, not just to create a film. I want to leave an impact. I want this genre to be a Drama/ Thriller. Possibly create a comic book along the way. I have a cover concept that I will share with you all very soon.
Getting other's perspective is crucial for me, since I am making this version as an alternative. Not messing with the DC (James Gunn) vision, but a independent drama, that not necessarily a action packed Superman movie.
Thank you Kav for your opinion and insight!

To create a character the audience cares about, make the character care about something. and avoid things that have been done to death like 'caring about humanity and saving the world'. have them care about something specific. and give them a negative trait. the 100% good hero is boring. I'm sort of a screenplay afficianado and you can run things past me if you like. From my illustrated screenplay tips:

It might be worth your while to read this book-it has some interesting perspectives on the superman character you never see in comics or movies:

Think about it-superman lives in a different world from us. his super senses put him in a completely different reality. also I'd ditch the secret identity-also done to death and a real superman would have no need for that.

Thank you for this! What I love about your insight Kav is the fact how your not against the idea of a South Asian Clark Kent, unless it's done CORRECTLY! I love the thoughts and the suggestions. Believe me I will take them into SERIOUS consideration! As someone who is South Asian, I don't want to do this because of a novelty or band wagon jumping! The purpose is to share a different perspective, and not having the need to justify that "hey he's not white!" Reading that book is a MUST for me. I will love to share the art work which I have but not allowed to do so as of YET! I think it looks great! But I will get honest answers from you and others! I recently starred in an Independent film along side Mickey Rourke. I am currently working with a major studio, on a romance drama about my life. I was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter about it and you can read it here: www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/toronto-prem-singh-michael-pugliese-to-star-in-mister-smith-drama-dating-after-marriage-4061629/I am all about 1 thing!! Audience FEEDBACK! Once I can provide more information I will be back and share them with you! Thank you for your amazing feedback! I need to figure out what Clark would care about that the audiences will care about as well, at the same time see past him looking "different" and having that Make sense on a different level.

Thank you, would love to know your thoughts. I have been pondering Clark's confession on his love for Lois. I wanted to create a unique relationship here.
If it sparks anything let me know.
Thanks

Thanks whatever you decide with the Lois thing there should be some sort of reason for his love-not just 'because she was there' as it has always been depicted. also there should be a boy gets girl boy loses girl boy gets girl back element-that never happens with superman and lois and its pretty much an essential for any interesting romance.

just be sure to do the exact opposite of what has always been done before with this story-root out cliches like an exterminator goin after rats.

Lois has always been depicted as a strong willed tough chick-go in the opposite direction-make her shy and vulnerable with some adorable trait. Give her a cat.

And remember the hero is always defined by the villain. superman movies have always had weak villains-by that I mean no complex character. lex luthor blah blah blah who cares. A villain like hannibal lecter on the other hand-one that the audience almost admires-now thats a strong villain.
Ps do you have permission to use the copyrighted character?

Not an out cast in a total racist type of way, but just "out of place." I have an image, I will upload and would love to hear what you all would think? Thank you Interesting and VERY broad/scattered cross-posting occurring here. One thing to keep in mind is whether you want to make a great movie, or appease/appeal to people, particularly comic book people. While it IS possible (do not ask Zod how) to make great films within the studio system, and thus include numerous loops of feedback and testing, Zod feels this is more the exception than the rule. Auteur-style filmmaking has produced the lion's share of great world cinema, but if you're plugged into the modern US commercial mainstream, and comfortable - even excited - about working within it, that's great. But keep in mind that the greatest cinematic iteration of Superman so far, and by far, is Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, in part a tragically Zod-less remake of Superman II. This film is as close to a masterpiece as the superhero genre has delivered, but Warner Bros. wasn't happy, and even Singer was browbeaten into badmouthing his edit and vision, this despite much critical praise, and the admiration of Quentin Tarantino, this in spite of (because of?) lacking the requisite endless brain-numbing action scenes and violence so tiresomely common to the genre. It's simply a magnificent story magnificently told, though of course on a personal level, Zod finds this adoration of Superman sickening. Needless to say, comic book people generally despise this film. What Zod is saying boils down to this: Serving many masters means many difficulties, and as an artist, your own vision should be the one you're most deeply concerned with. Thus the most important voice is singular. Regards, GZ
