NOTE: NO COVID DISCUSSION IN THIS THREAD. _____________________
It's quite something, and sometimes a COINTELPRO tactic.
Someone claiming to support certain ideas, values and causes proceeds to behave in such an obnoxious fashion that even those initially sympathetic become alienated and even hostile to both the individual and their cause/s.
It's effective in COINTELPRO circles because the disruption and negative energy these individuals create serves to erode both sympathy and credibility.
One may not be certain if they're dealing with an abrasively incompetent True Believer who GENUINELY doesn't grasp how much damage s/he's doing to their alleged pet cause/s, OR an actual agent working against the cause/s, but the effect is the same.
Thus the incompetent and the COINTELPRO agent serve the same purpose, that being to destroy confidence in the very narratives and counter-narratives they appear to be championing.

It occurs to me that the term "True Believer" has some connotations to the comic book tribe that don't pertain to my usage, or Stan's jocular appropriation of said term. A definition follows: www.wordnik.com/words/true%20believerTo the True Believer (TB), zealot or fanatic (or fauxnatic as might be the case), counter-evidence and reality are inconveniences to be dismissed or attacked depending on the TB's mood of the moment. The important thing to remember is that regardless of the fanatic's/fauxnatic's true intentions, no actual logical or scientific discourse can proceed beyond the TB's endless need to sermonize on his/her pet obsessions. But whether the evangelist is cheating on their spouse and stealing from the poor box, or truly pious in deed as well as thought, the reaction and outcome are always finally the same: Repulsion and rejection by those targeted by the TB's endless tirades. Because of this, only the fauxnatic is ultimately successful in their goal; the fanatic will always fail both themselves and their cause, doing much harm to both in the course of their zealotry.
