"I talked to the graders and they said since it is a 9.0 that all the defects should be visible through the slab." Including the PQ, dog ears, and filled-out coupons.

Not even remotely surprising.
And, of course, the idea that they could ever have had a census is finally put to bed with this. They were never going to have a census, and if they did, it would be incomplete and virtually useless.
It's frustrating to the point of anger. You had people who were both willing and able to do whatever it took to make that company successful, who would AND COULD crack the whip and keep everyone in line...and, instead, it was populated with thin-skinned, incompetent "good ol' boys club" people.
It's a tragedy of Grecian proportions.

It's a tragedy of Grecian proportions. They probably saw no upside to a census (only to their customers), and plenty of downside if compared to their competition - their market share would be readily apparent. But as you say, that ship has sailed now, never to return. What I find unimaginable, is that any company operating in the 21st century couldn't find an inexpensive way to backup their data. Given that free grader notes are viewed by many as their sole competitive advantage, you would think that they would have taken steps to protect it.

But...it would have been easily accepted by the market, since they were new. Census data is notoriously flawed, but it does help to get an idea of what is slabbed, and what exists...plus, there was no reason why they shouldn't have had a registry. And that they had no backup is ridiculous, but not even remotely surprising. There was simply no one in charge. If someone had scripted CBCS' failure, they could not have done a better job.

Even after their first case failed and had to be recalled, there was still plenty of enthusiasm in the market for some real CGC competition. ...plus, there was no reason why they shouldn't have had a registry.> This I've never understood. A registry encourages competition, which promotes more submissions - it's a no brainer. It would seem that, even in the face of razor thin profit margins, it would make sense to spend the resources to set it up and manage it.

I'm sure the census is........."coming soon." Just like the improvements (based on actual board feedback) to the message board.
