Man, I thought SD was cool when I went, I can't imagine going with a famous artist! Glad it all went well Scott, I'm super jealous.

Man, I thought SD was cool when I went, I can't imagine going with a famous artist! Glad it all went well Scott, I'm super jealous. Thanks Stu I felt like a kid in a candy shop. I was easily the biggest person at the table, (though Pollard is pretty tall), but I felt like a child allowed to sit at the 'grownup's' table for the first time. The only drawback was that the setting didn't make it appropriate (in my mind) for me to act like a fanboy. If I do this again, I feel I'll need to ask to be more included in the "handling" of Mike's schedule. All guests are assigned a GRP assistant, but Mike needed someone to act as a go-between. I think it would make things move smoothly as Mike was constantly distracted and sidetracked by fans and Cosplay girls, but may result in less floor-wandering time. Still, 5 days should be enough to get things done.

Arthur Adams and daughter Alex. This is cool, but taking her to conventions teaches her "what it takes to be a working artist?" It makes it sound like the big publishers require them to go to Cons if they want to keep their jobs.

This is indeed very cool. I don't know about publisher's influence on con appearances, but part of being a "working artist" is making appearances and keeping your work in the minds of the fans. If the fans continue to see you and your work at the shows they will continue to petition the publishers for more of your work in their comics, thus ensuring your continued "employment". Known artists command higher fees than unknown artists.

I definitely see it as a great way to put one's name out there in an environment filled with potential new fans, but I suppose since I just recently started attending Cons I still see things from the POV of a fan who does not, like when I was buying new comics from the rack 30 years ago. I'm not sure what percentage of worldwide fans attend Cons, but whether I saw the creators in person or not had nothing to do with my desire to see their work in the next issue. The only thing (for me) to change that was the quality going south. But yes, as a way to advertise oneself- that makes sense. Unfortunately I missed him at SD.

Funny story, back when Britney Spears was first getting popular, I had all but convinced the shop I worked at at the time that I had a restraining order put on me by her management. I made enough side jokes & obscure references to an "incident" that most of them believed it. Good times... FTR - I do not and have not ever been in trouble with the law other than riding my bike on a NYC sidewalk (I stopped & looked at a restaurant's menu in their window without getting off the bike), for which I received a $15 citation.
