I'm glad I don't collect moderns. Is that you saying that or are you just talking like a comic collector? I'm the guy that shows up and says there have been a lot of great comics in the past 20 years. And why is it that all the good writers aren't from the US? Moore, Ennis, Morrison, Ellis, Millar, Gaiman, etc.

Although, coincidentally, I've bought maybe a dozen or two new comics in the last 10 years - so I don't collect moderns, I suppose.

After the "Sins Past" story arc in ASM, I seriously considered to stop buying new Marvels. A couple issues later, in the Letters Column (do they still have those? they seemed to be going away) a reader complained about ruining the Gwen Stacy legacy, and the lettercoll editor, whoever it was, replied "If you don't like what we're doing, maybe you should buy something else." - Or words to that effect.
So I promptly stopped buying ASM (which I bought faithfully since 1964), and the rest of the Marvel titles followed. I pick up the occasional issue to see what I'm missing and nothing has drawn me back in. My primary interest is superheroes, though I am fond of some war, western, horror and humor comics.
I really think comics outgrew me - modern story telling techniques don't appeal to me, along with modern art & coloring. Most of the new art and coloring pulls me out of the story rather than into it. And there seems to be way less story per purchasing dollar than ever before (for the most part).
I'm a fan of guys like Stan, Jack, Steve, Wally, Barks, Weisinger, Schwartz, Feldstein, Kurtzman, Eisner, and Warren (James). While I enjoyed Watchmen, early Sin City, and DD Born Again; the tone & style wore on me and wasn't something I wanted a regular diet of. I can re read my '60s and early-mid '70s Marvel, DC and Charltons; my Barks, EC's and Warrens; over and over again and enjoy it. The later stuff, not so much.
In 2005 realized I had been buying new comics for the past 20 years mostly out of habit & run completion, not enjoyment. (with notable exceptions). Thanks to Michael Straczynski, that all changed.

I may try and find that issue and post a scan of the lettercoll reply - it was really unbelievable at the time. Stan would have never said that. He made us think he listens to the readers, not scorn them. It made my decision easy. After 40 years of faithful buying, I stopped cold turkey. Like my drinking & drugging, I then realized I neither enjoyed or needed it. Now, I focus on the older stuff I like. I'm sure there's great new stuff out there, and if I were younger or of a different mindset, I'd likely love it. To each his own.

The beginning of the end for me, I cancelled my ASM pull after reading this issue and have never bought another new Spidey. Then I read the tripe known as House of M. Then the final straw was the way they ruined World War Hulk. I gave up on Marvel but there was no way I was giving up on new comics.

No, I was buying some Image, Valiant/Acclaim (whatever they were at the time), Dark Horse, a smattering of DC, and some indies.
I enjoyed Cartoon Books' Bone, Images' Savage Dragon (for a while, anyway - I know), Astro City, Leave it to Chance, Maxx. Dark Horse Presents. Next Men. Madman. Some of the Aliens and Predator stuff (thought that got old). Concrete (though that got preachy). Xenozoic Tales (when it ever came out) was a masterpiece in my opinion.
I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting. I went through the AC - Caliber - Malibu - First- Bravura -Topps era(s), et al era(s). Some occasional gems, lotsa drek.
