I've always wondered if it were possible for people to catch some type of disease from these books. Leptospira would typically only survive for a few weeks, so infection is extremely unlikely if the books were chewed years ago. Also, the rat would need to pee on the book. Saliva isn't considered to be a significant risk.
There was a case in the UK many years ago where a man visited a pub and asked for a bottle of beer. The beer had been stored in a rat-infested cellar where a rat had peed on the bottle. The man died some weeks later from Leptospirosis (Weil's disease).
Anyway, I'm getting
Thanks for the info. I knew pee and poop were bad, but didn't know much about saliva. It's still kind of gross thinking about owning a book that a mouse was chewing on for days/weeks.

A lot of the things I had no problem with as a kid, I cannot even begin to consider doing now... like walking barefoot through grass or rolling around in the grass. Maybe it was city life that made it a non issue and moving to Oregon where the critters are everywhere, paying daily and nightly potty breaks on lawns and parks all over town made me see grass in a different light, but the thought makes my skin crawl.

We have cute mice around here but I never see rats. The animal that ruins golf courses/lawns/parks/ballfields/grass around here are fricking geese. Holy crap I would kill 'em all if I could. They absolutely ruined the UConn campus. When I lived in Seattle one person posed a great solution to two problems: kill all the geese and feed them to the homeless. Yes!

I've had house mice as pets, the cats bring em to me half dead and sometimes I save them,if they live, they get a real, real fine life I'm a softy.

The first key comic that I bought was at a flea market in Alameda, CA, back in the 80s. It had significant chew marks, but I was happy to own this book. I recreated the missing parts of the cover using pictures from what I believe was an Overstreet guide. While it's no longer my pride and joy, it's still a book in my personal collection. I love this so much

I have similar thoughts about the local playing field. Sunday starts with walkies and come 10AM, it's rugby field.
I went on a boating holiday once and there were signs on the canal warning you not swim in the water due to the risk of Weil's disease. One evening, after mooring up, I throw in the mud weight anchor and got a mouthful of canal water
