I'll defer my vote for the time being.
I've only been on boards where the Shoutbox was Members Only. Mostly used to post interesting or timely links that don't need their own thread. I don't believe anonymous ridicule is a plus in the long term. If every time I logged on I saw "Steve is a poopy-head" I'd grow weary of the site...and quickly.
There are other upsides where a possible lurker asks a question or something relevant to comic books (which is probably how they found the site to begin with)and then joins, and for members to post casual messages to one another.

Voted. A shoutbox is a useful tool, although having it members only is kind of redundant. However, with that said, it's pretty much a given this site will from here on will be a target for  , so being members only isn't so bad |

From Shoutbox... Can you restrict access by setting a probationary period? Give new starters their own Shoutbox so they don't feel left out... You could call it the Outbox  |
