Can you buy milk in any other container? For the record, cartons never took off in the UK. Most of our milk now comes in plastic bottles...

Oh how I miss these... This was "gold top" milk, i.e. whole milk or "full fat". You had to shake it before opening to mix up the cream otherwise the it settled at the top and the first pour would be almost neat cream. It was delivered to your door by the local milkman, with whom you had a standing order. In the winter, if you left gold top on the doorstep for too long, the cream would freeze and burst out through the foil top. In the spring, if you left it out for too long, the birds would peck through the top and drink the cream!

Last delivery we had was about 25 years ago. Things have changed though... We stopped getting a delivery around the time the shops started staying open late.

My mom used to try to give us powered/evaporated milk when I was young. Most disgusting thing I've ever tasted.

I guess I should've just said powered milk, the stuff you posted I think of as condensed milk. This stuff we had looked like flour and then you added water to it. God damn it was disgusting. We got it free b/c we hosted a lot of foster kids, but their lives was tough enough to begin with, why torture them with powered milk? The giant block of gov't cheese wasn't bad tho

powdered milk is not so bad in coffee or teas as a whitener. When first on my own as a teen, the high school would provide some groceries to me twice a month, and there was always powdered milk and potatoes(and baked beans and tins of creamed corn.ALWAYS).If I used one and half times the powder as it said and put it in the fridge over night it was not bad with cereal.
