So, a good chunk of DC's Silver Age lineup began as tryouts in other books. From Showcase #4 to Showcase #80, it was an easy way for DC to try out new concepts without having to commit to a new title. Marvel did the same...to an extent. The famous story of Amazing Fantasy #15 is often told, and Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, and others all started as tryouts in existing mags...but for several other creations, they went with a new #1, which was a pretty big risk (with a pretty hefty failure in Hulk.) But what if the Fantastic Four had started in Journey Into Mystery #74? Or Tales of Suspense #23? What if Spiderman had continued being published in Amazing Fantasy #16 and beyond...?

What if they continued Amazing Fantasy featuring Spider-Man as well as the Spider-Man main book? Marvel wasn't as savvy as DC who featured their main characters in multiple monthly titles...Batman/Detective Comics/World's Finest...Superman/Action Comics/World's Finest. Marvel didn't have a 2nd Spider-man title for nearly 10 years (Marvel Team-Up).

That's the ultimate What If?: What if Marvel never had to make the distribution deal with DC?
