Apparently my expectations for this thread were unrealistic. I did enjoy this comment someone left under the story, though: {Spoiler}"Sponge Man"
1 million people: raids Area 51
US government: lets them in and plays this song in the empty labs You had expectations?

Okay,I snuck a peek. The artists pretentious blurb about the piece chased me away till daytime.
The artist explains the inspiration behind this work as well as the message he wants to convey through his personal website: “There will be a time when all tracings of human culture will dissolve back into the soil under the slow crush of the unfolding universe. The pool, black and depthless, represents loss, represents mystery and represents the collective subconscious of the human race. By placing these records underneath the dark and obscure surface of the pool, I am enacting a small moment of remorse towards this loss. In the end however this is an optimistic sculpture, for just after that moment of submergence; tone, melody and ultimately song is pulled back out of the pool, past the veil of the subconscious, out from under the crush of time, and back into a living and breathing realm.”

I found it difficult to enter into this work because of how the sublime beauty of the negative space contextualize the inherent overspecificity of the underlying theme.

I'll in his black pool of weakness and fading memories, forever tainting his craven brew. I will beat an alternate path where humans rise above all obstacles, conquer death, tame the universe, and forge it into whatever shape suits them best in the blast furnace of desire and curiosity. We will feast on galaxies, drink nebulae, and meet our maker on common ground. But mainly I just thought it was cool that it worked underwater.

I'll add I was told they were military use, have no confirmation. This one is a 1957 and looks identical to one of mine. You should see my ancient 35mm slide projector. (Argus) It's built solid as a rock and I still use it occasionally. We used to have one of those. My mother recently scanned all the slides onto her PC. Took her months!

I prefer "Grandpere". Sort of regal and dignified.
