Is this all coming from Water Cooler discussions? Yeah, mainly the Coronavirus thread.
People are getting agitated and attacking and when I try to defend myself I get dinged for being 'contentious'. That's the mod's favorite word lately. That and banning people for the slightest political post.
Banning political discussions from the comic areas makes perfect sense, but I think they 'could' allow them in the Water Cooler. That's the kind of forum where you expect politics. It seems to me that banning them leads to coded discussions and increased reporting/moderation. Then again, I suppose it's possible that allowing political discussions poses some risk to the corporate image in today's hyper-sensitive world.

Man, the moderators at the CGC forum are working on tilt.
I've had 3 x 7 week bans and 2 x 2 day bans in the last month and a bit.
Crazy.
Explain your ban numbers please

Then again, I suppose it's possible that allowing political discussions poses some risk to the corporate image in today's hyper-sensitive world. The moderation is pretty ridiculous lately.
Like, a few weeks ago they were assigning strikes to board members who simply posted pictures of Lysol. It was crazy.
Me personally, I'm generally pretty big on taking the high road but there's a group of people who are constantly derogatory and if you make any effort in defending yourself (and someone hits the notify moderators button so the mods see it) they drop the hammer and moderate you.
It's a pretty ridiculous system because moderation is only activated when someone hits the notify button and that notify button has become a weapon to some vindictive members.
For example, I got moderated for a week for 'masking' simply because I posted sh*7
But other members post it and nobody cares.
One argument is that the owners of CGC maybe politically leaning and any posts that oppose their political leanings may encourage their wrath.
But long story short, moderation has been dodgy ever since the moderators stopped hanging out among board members and it's been outsourced to a corporate entity.
Now it's just robotic and biased by the whims of those hitting the 'notify moderator' button.

Explain your ban numbers please Pretty simple and self explanatory.
Banned 3 times with 7 day bans. Banned 2 times with 2 day bans.

How close is this to a permaban?

How close is this to a permaban? I’m not really sure there’s a cut ‘n’ dry formula any more.

You get points assigned like a driving citation. They expire over time.

I don't really understand how their 'points system' works. I know one person who was told by CGC Moderation that his points will never expire.

Below is what is supposed to be the system in place, but I’m not sure how close it’s followed or what flexibility the individual Mods have in assigning points/punishments. I know someone just recently received a six day ban(could not post) for comments made towards 2-3 members in a WC thread, not political in nature(they’ve returned since). I don’t recall their accumulated points.
* Infraction levels, points, and expirations:
Notices - Just an official message to the user with 0 points awarded in order to communicate the reasons for removing a post. (new) Warnings - 1 point that expires in 3 months (like an old private warning) Minor violations - 3 points that expire in 6 months (like an old wrist slap) Major violations - 5 points that expire in 1 year (like an old strike) Last chance - 15 points that expire in 1 year (like the old "multiple strikes for one egregious offense") Unacceptable behavior - 18 points, no expiration (like the old instant ban)
* Over time members will accumulate points on their account, and that current point TOTAL will determine the restrictions applied to their account by the system WHENEVER an infraction is applied according to the schedule below:
0 points - no restrictions
1 point - no restrictions
3 points - 2 days restricted posting (can login, and I think PM, just can't post)
5 points - 7 day restricted posting
10 points - 14 day ban (can't use the site)
15 points - 21 day ban
18 points - permanent ban
I’ve made little effort to ever memorize this, as it’s always seemed just a fallback for potential punitive action the Mods can point to if needed.

I've never seen moderation so tight like it is right now over there. They were handing out points like it was candy.
Most of my strikes wouldn't have made anyone bat an eye in the last 16 years that I've been there but today many board members have learned that abusing the notify moderation system can raise awareness of the moderators to board members that they don't like.
And that's probably what happened to RMA.
What is really hypocritical is that the mods created the environment that they have now because for years they let certain members fly under the radar that were cancerous over there. They flew under the radar because they were just subtle enough to stop from getting notified but they were always insidious over there.
Some of them have moved on out of the hobby and many have moved on to other sites.
Another thing that happens over there (and probably on many other forums) is that groups form cliques behind the scenes, whether at conventions or via PM or on other sites. They buzz around and talk about things and then form groups and then those groups show up on the CGC forum only you initially don't realize there's this bond between them. Then they begin to pick away at you and it looks innocent enough to bystanders but the target knows what's happening, as do the group that is involved.
That's the way it was for me for years over there.

Yeah, I've talked to quite a few people about this who have similar stories. For example, about a year ago Jeffro was moderated (later reversed) for joking around about Phil's Parking Lot - it's the second post of this thread. This makes me wonder if some or all of the veteran volunteers who were taking care of CGC's moderation left and were replaced by forum noobs who don't understand the forum history or the relationships between members. I think knowing the relationships between members is important because without that it's easy to fall prey to weaponized reporting tactics - like a group of friends targeting someone they don't like.

Looks like I should follow Roy around more But the above post is way too general. I need names, websites, emails. You know, the good stuff!

So over at CGC Chuck Gower changed his name to There is Sauerkraut in my Lederhosen. Wth? Anyone know the reason for the change?
