Ok, lets start with the extreme, "WANT"...yeah, I WANT everything, but my income says differently. I sold off my comic book collections many years ago and just recently decided that I wanted to recollect an FF run. So when I started about 3 years ago my goal was to collect issues # 164-295 plus related annuals in VF++/NM/M. My goal was successful & then went past issue #295 to issue #354 (last Simonson issue)...then I decided to go before issue #164 and bought #143 & 144 & then of course I had to buy the in-between issues (or most of them). Now my dilemma is this...how far back prior to issue # 143 do I want to go? Should I just stop now and be content? The KIRBY issues are great, but do I really want to go back and collect this early?? I am thinking...NO! This may not be a correct answer, !
So, collecting goals, do they mean anything...are you able to stick to them?

I look at collecting goals as loose guidelines. Heck, I buy random current comics unless I stop buying altogether.
As for the FF(my favorite title), you picked an OK end point, but realize there's still good stuff between #102 and #143. I like the Goodwin/Thomas/Conway stories as well as the art throughout, and you've got Frightful Four, Thundra, Crystal, and Inhumans mixed in there, too. #119 with "Black Leopard" is a neat story, IMO.
Maybe go for somewhat lower grades?

Thanks for the clarity...you are right, so many good collecting points to start/collect from. But..."lower grades"...NOT an option.

Low grades are the reason my Want List is so small

One goal I feel I'll have a difficult time with is The Incredible Hulk 1-6. It'll probably be easier to get an ASM #1.

At this point I'm not sure I want to 'bother' buying 2-6 unless I already have #1. It shouldn't be different from collecting a big run like ASM, but yet it feels that way for me.

What would you consider to be the lowest acceptable grade for your collection? It's not definitive, depends on the age and the comic. For the FF I prefer NM for all the 1980's and 1990's comics, mid to late 70's VF is acceptable, prior to mid 70's it just depends, but the older Kirby issues would be acceptable to me in a VG+. I dunno, I have seen lesser grades that look great, overall eye appeal has a lot to do with it for me regardless of given grade. I have some of the old Dennis the Menace Giants from the 1950's and 1960's and have some really sharp VG copies with great eye appeal.

Hmm...my collecting goals on what I want versus my reality? I guess my want is to have the first three issues of key DC/Marvel silver age titles. The reality is I may not be able to do so for some titles even in low grade.

Pretty much anything with a cover is my sweet spot for some of these books.

Trades welcome!

I was lucky to have bought quite a few of the major first issue keys 10+ years ago, but now the #2 and #3's cost more than what i paid for the #1's.

That must be really frustrating to collect large runs of titles but those first few keys are just too darn expensive to obtain without going into debt.
