To answer your question Bryan, I don't mind a little foxing (very slight discoloration) on the cover as long as there isn't splotches or if it looks like residue left behind from coffee grounds. That's a good answer, but are you more lenient with this on older comics only like I am?

I am a little more lenient, as long as it doesn't distract too much from the cover or if it's not a white cover. Back cover foxing is more acceptable since it's easy to cover it up with a backing board.

It's easy to get confused because you read it is mold or fungus, then you read it is the acidity in the paper breaking down, then about tanning...not sure if this is in the same category as foxing?

The book above would be an example of too much foxing for my collection. I would be okay if the defect was due to dirt, but because foxing can potentially get worse I try to stay away from this.

I don't turn my nose up at foxing if it's a rarer book,a lot of the comics I collect i'm just happy to get a copy of.Anything after the late fifties, early sixties,I will pass up on though..unless it's say a run filler for pre hero Marvel i've been having a hard time tracking down.

@ Stu and Siggy...you're both just jumping at the bit, aren't you? It was a two pronged question, and this is a discussion board. Note the OP's first sentence.
Okay, I will look at the first sentence, and at the somewhat rhetorical and minor question within it. 1) My personal opinion is that a little bit of foxing and yellow tinting/tanning on a comic book from the 60's and older is acceptable, 2) in fact it gives the comic some character... 3) If that makes any sense?)It looks like Bryan is 1) admittedly stating his opinion on whether or not he finds a small amount of foxing to be acceptable, and 2) why he feels this. Then 3) the question is if that makes sense. He does NOT ask 'why', or 'when', or 'if' he should buy them. Unless you are able to get books (SA/BA) that have foxing , at a h'yuuuge discount, do not buy them. GA books, have some leeway due to scarcity IMO. And he did NOT ask for ways to treat it. Foxing is basically a fungus/mold, it cannot be removed by any other method besides chemicals. You can halt it though, for the most part, by dry cleaning the effected area (just getting the top layer of surface gunk off) with Absorene paper & book cleaner. Dry cleaning won't remove the mold itself; it will reduce its' spreading. In conjunction with storing your books properly, which is the more pressing issue. So how does your post address the two pronged question? The 2nd question in his post (there were only two now) is the one I'm going to assume Bryan was hoping people would address. Stu's post was funny. I liked it. After all, it's a Discussion Board (you're right about that) with a 'Like' feature.

Sigs:
Sorry, I am not too slick at utilizing the multi-qoute function so I will just respond via a lump sum format, so to speak.
Bryan's post was two pronged, sure.It was also fairly open ended.
He started a thread on foxing on a comic forum.
I offered my opinion, along with about 3 sentences of advice.
Seemd like a helpful thing to do.
If my thougts were not particularly helpful to Bryan, maybe someone else may find some of my thoughts helpful or whatnot. If not, it's not hurting anyone. Cheers.

I would like to offer my opinion on foxing. Foxing (i.e. deceiving) another person is pretty shoddy practice, particularly when related to the sale of a comic book.

I never said you couldn't post what you posted. I laughed because you were being too "helpful" to supply an answer the OP actually wanted. btw- Anyone notice how the "two pronged question" suddenly became a "two pronged post" after it was pointed out that CAK addressed neither question in the original post as he claimed? = Back pedal.

Dude, this is a comic book discussion board. Not an attack posts made by individuals that you do not like board. The OP had no issue with my post. You, Metal and the other 2 or so guys who troll me are the ones who took exception to my post. That says a lot.
