We've been talking about this in a various ways for a while now. Not Noting The NewsstandsCorrect or incorrect, the following is something that I see all the time in the larger comic book community, especially with new collectors: Thoughts?

Aestheticly speaking, I find the UPC box to be utterly dreadful.

As i've said before,I prefer the newstand as it's a nostalgia thing for me.Also,a lot of the Canadian newstand versions in the copper age are Canadian price variants....

Are US copies referred to US variants in Canada?

No. At least, I don't. As for the whole newsstand vs direct thing... The hype is all about print runs and finding high quality copies. Newsstands were supposedly treated rougher than directs, therefore the logic is that there are less high quality newsstands out there than directs. I find them to be interesting because in my Maxx collection craze I have only ever stumbled upon two or three newsstands that have been graded. I own a 9.6 issue 27 myself. My personal preference? I agree with Stubing, UPC's are fugly.

In my early collecting years, newsstand copies were the "real" copies. Books without a UPC number were usually Whitman reprints and weren't as collected back then. So, I'm with Jimba, newsstands bring back some nostalgia for me.

I think I come from the same perspective as Fiddy in that non-upc books weren't the 'real' thing, but strictly for marketing to specialty stores. I do agree somewhat the Spidey head (or whatever) in the box looks nicer, but I value the idea that the UPC books came from a random spinner rack, newsstand, etc.
As for the 'handling' concern, I'd think by the late 80's enough comic enthusiasts or collectors were treating their books post purchase the same, i.e. bags & boards regardless of where the books were bought. As for the ratio of direct vs. Non-direct maybe that's an area Organic Squishee could chime in on. I suspect lower grade copies of UPC books may be more common simply because there are(were) more of them out there until a certain point when more books came through the direct market.

Are US copies referred to US variants in Canada? No,because US copies have both the American price, then also the Canadian as well....Not positive on the newstands actually,i'd have to check.Never thought of that. I don't like the term variant, but,it's the accepted term I guess.Always just thought of them as Canadian copies.

I think it's more accepted with newer collectors and flippers since "variant" implies rarity and that nowadays is what seems to matter.

Variant is a stupid buzzword that is totally used out of context to do with this hobby these days.
I can't consider a newsstand as a "variant". It's not. It's the newsstand edition. Which is no different than the direct edition when it comes to content. Other than being printed on better paper and has more ads or sometimes a insert, there is absolutely no difference. It's the same story and the same artwork.

First comment here. Still trying to figure this board/forum thing out.
But I digress.
Simple math: newsstands had lower printings and distribution. This makes them less common. Some might say this makes them hard-to-find and/or rare.
Proof: please journey to eBay. Search New Mutants 98. Count the number of Newsstand versions and the number of Direct versions. Finding a Direct version is easy, so easy. But for some collectors, notice I did not say all, the Newsstand version has more of an allure, since it is less common.
My 2 cents. Personally I opt for, and gravitate towards, Newsstand versions of comics I want. *shrugs* It's my thing.
