Does he slide everybody's books around like that? After seeing how haphazardly he handles a silver age key, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending his services. I thought the exact same thing. Frankly, even with all the bull that Dice has spewed in the last year, I was still INCREDIBLY shocked that he would do this to ANY comic, much less am Avengers #4. Does he not think this has any effect..? What the hell is wrong with these people...? Am I just some freak of nature who understands that these things are made of PAPER, not steel, and have to be handled GENTLY...? It's...it's just shocking. Completely, totally shocking. I wish I could say Dice should know better, but after his shameful behavior running their message board, I am NOT surprised. And I hope he reads this. I should make a comment on the Fecesbook comment section. I have just discovered, on an unrelated issue, that comments on Fecesbook on someone's "page" can be deleted. What a complete waste of time. So, even if I make a comment, it is likely to simply be deleted, because: $$$.

Somebody questioned the spinning, put 'professional' in quotes and used the term "amateur hour". We'll see how long that comment stays up.

'Snipping Tool' is a desktop app that comes free with Windows software. It can copy all or a portion of whatever you see on the screen. I don't see a 'Joe Howard' post.

Things like this really expose the far more important underlying truths. Spinning this book around the table isn't the problem...it's only the SYMPTOM of a far worse problem. It's not that the book is being scuffed against a surface, which is horrifying in itself: it's that there isn't the knowledge, experience, professionalism, and BASIC COMMON SENSE involved that would prevent someone from handling a book like this in the first place. I doubt the thought ever even crossed Ricketts' mind...obviously, or he wouldn't have posted it. He didn't even know what he was doing was a problem. And HE'S "in charge" of some level of CBCS. And it's this incredible shortsightedness that really highlights the problem: there are people handling high value, fragile, delicate, old paper that have absolutely NO respect for it. NONE. Mountains out of molehills...? Sure, IF it was confined to just this book. But of course, obviously, it isn't. It's just a window into the much wider problem. And no, grading companies shouldn't be pressing books, either. It creates an inherent conflict of interest. Imagine this scenario: Presser: "(ah, , I screwed this book up. Son of a .) Hey, grader...I damaged this book while pressing it. It won't show in the slab, but I think it should have been a X.X before I screwed it up. Would you mind giving it that grade anyways?" Grader: "Sure, no problem boss." Or, even worse: Presser: "I damaged this book. It needs to be this grade. Make it so." Or, far worse: Presser: "This book needs to be this grade. Make it so." There is nothing whatsoever stopping this from occurring. Nothing. I don't give two s about someone's "reputation"; that doesn't mean jack , ESPECIALLY when there is ANY question about it. It's way too easy, and, since it's all just "opinion", it's easily justified and swept under the rug. Believe me...I've damaged books in ways that weren't really my fault (part of the inherent risk of trying to fix old, fragile paper), and ways that were 100% unequivocally my fault...and that conversation with the customer SUCKS CANAL WATER...but it MUST be done. Have I always had that conversation? No, not always, because sometimes, the book isn't damaged out of the "grade range" (especially 9.8) that it would have gotten anyways. And I'm talking about "look at it with a loupe" type damage...but it's STILL damage caused by the process. Rare, but not impossible, even with the most diligent and gentle people. I pressed an FF #45 that had a 1/4" "sun damage strip" along the spine, parallel to it, the length of the cover. I should have told the customer it wasn't worth the risk...but I went ahead and did it, and guess what? Both staples popped on the "front" half (that is, the paper under the staples didn't come out entirely.) Book ended up being a 4.5. The customer was hoping for a 6.0. I was horrified. I shouldn't have taken the risk. Now, GRANTED, it's STILL A RISK, and EVERY customer must understand this...but, if I had more experience, I wouldn't have taken the risk in the first place. It was just delicate enough that the paper couldn't handle the stress. The customer blamed me, and to an extent, they were right, but they should have understood the risks, too. I cannot imagine...I just CANNOT imagine...these factory pressers and what they're doing to these books. I just cannot imagine. It's like handing over a couple of Water Lilies to the auto-body guy to touch up. Even "the best in the business" turn out shoddy work...and some of those "most respected" names go after me, personally, wholly unrelated to pressing. "Don't you dare upset our apple carts, you loudmouth jerk! Who do you think you are, interfering with our $$$$? We'll just marginalize you, and relentlessly call you a "bad person" who "needs to be banned", because we hate you trying to educate people into making wiser decisions!" Is anyone hearing this...? Is any of this getting through in any widespread manner...? Or am I just shouting in the hurricane, relegated to the distant corners of this hobby, with little impact on anyone in any meaningful way...? I fear it's the latter. I don't want CBCS to fail. And I HATE that I have to say that CONSTANTLY, or the immature people who operate CBCS will think I hate their company. I don't hate their company...I hate that THEY don't know what they're doing, and would far rather they KNEW what they were doing. What a damn clusterfuck.

What is a "snipping tool"? By the way, I am "Joe Howard", and I made a comment, as well. Let's see if it stays. 'Snipping Tool' is a desktop app that comes free with Windows software. It can copy all or a portion of whatever you see on the screen. I don't see a 'Joe Howard' post. Yup. My comment was "marked as spam", which effectively deletes it. SUPER classy. Here is the post in question: "You should never, ever, EVER slide a book on ANY surface, for any reason, at any time. Yes, there are surfaces that won't damage a book if gently slid against...plastic, glass, etc....but, in general, ANY surface that has any amount of friction will eventually cause "ink transfer" or "rub" damage. Just check out any backing board...even the slick, glossy kind...that has had an inked surface (ie., the back cover of a modern comic, for example) to see that transfer, no matter how slightly. NEVER create this kind of friction." Let me say this, to one and all: you, Steve Ricketts (aka "DiceX"), are an unprofessional, amateur, petulant, irresponsible, cowardly person. I once respected you...that is before I found out that you don't give two s about reason, responsibility, PROPERLY handling people's comics, or the rule of law. Shame on you. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You owe me a VERY serious apology, Steve Ricketts, along with all the other people whom you have dismissed. I am so angry at this attempt to silence criticism. It's so fraudulent. Here's the new post, sure to soon be deleted: "One more time, and "marking this as spam" is unprofessional: You should never, ever, EVER slide a book on ANY surface, for any reason, at any time. Yes, there are surfaces that won't damage a book if gently slid against...plastic, glass, etc....but, in general, ANY surface that has any amount of friction will eventually cause "ink transfer" or "rub" damage. Just check out any backing board...even the slick, glossy kind...that has had an inked surface against it (ie., the back cover of a modern comic, for example) to see that transfer, no matter how slightly. NEVER create this kind of friction. If you can't handle legitimate criticism, you don't belong in business."

And it's been marked as spam again.
"No, no, you must NOT criticize me, no matter how legitimately! You MUST NOT! If you do, I will SILENCE you! How DARE you criticize me! Well, I'll show YOU. Watch THIS."
The power that Fecesbook gives people has got to be intoxicating to those who don't know how to wield it.
It's fraud, on a grand scale, and do people think they will escape its consequences...?
On a related note, I remain impressed at the IMMENSE lack of understanding of basic human nature these people display when they attempt to silence criticism. Do they think that these people say "oh, well, I guess that's that, then, on the other things!"...?
No, silencing criticism almost always has the OPPOSITE effect, by making those critics angry enough to make themselves a LEGITIMATE thorn in your side.
You want to guarantee you'll make enemies: try and shut them down.
It's just like Obi-Wan: "strike me down, and I shall become more powerful than you can ever imagine."

Sent via the Fecesbook "messaging" system:
" Chat Conversation Start
12:52PM Have you lost your ever-loving mind, Ricketts...? Do you think you can escape legitimate criticism by just deleting it?"
"DO NOT "spin" books around like you did in that video. Stop being offended at criticism, stop being a child and deleting PROFESSIONAL criticism, and simply STOP doing it."
And with that, I am out. I've done what I can for now.

And if these are the "pros" doing stuff like this imagine the amatuers who just bought a new press. Pressing has this hobby up but good, but there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. It pretty much killed it for me. I had a large chunk of older X-Men to fill my collection, and just knowing that most of those books I would be buying were pressed made me re-think my collection. I accept that it is part of the hobby now, and have had books pressed - ones I was going to sell. At least I know the true OO books in my collection are pristine in that regard. That video does remind me that the voices of people on this chatboard probably don't sound like I think they do. Dice has more of an accent than I thought. I bet Slym does too. And of course there's Bats, who knows what he sounds like. I wonder if my accent sounds funny to you guys People here ask me where I am from all the time. I get Kansas, California, even Chicago once (!?!?!), but when I moved to NYC for those three years, everyone knew right away I was a Southerner. I definitely don't have a "hick" accent - by that I mean, the word "pen" has one syllable, and the 'e' is flat. Not "PEE-yun". There is a site out there called Vocaroo that lets you record stuff & have it linked so anyone on the web can hear it, but my new(-ish) laptop does not have a port for a microphone for some reason, otherwise I'd record Shel Silverstein's "Twistable Turnable Man" for you all to hear!
