Anyone else get a flood of memories that come back while you're decorating or listening to Christmas music?
Like...
My dad had an HO train set...very small...just a circle of track that went around the Christmas tree. The engine wasn't traditional...it was something they used to put long freight trains together at the yard or something. But he had trees, and a station with little people. We weren't allowed to touch it until we got older. And we only saw it once a year.
My mom (and we would help) would decorate the front windows of the house with something called Glasswax. I looked for it, and I don't think they make it anymore. The stuff looked like Pepto-Bismol coming out of the little can, and then you would pour out a little into a bowl and mix in food coloring. Then you took a damp sponge and patted it onto the window on the inside to make Christmas scenes. We even had stencils that came out of a book to make the manger scene, trees, Santa and reindeer, etc. It was a lot of fun, and you could get really creative.

Anyone else get a flood of memories that come back while you're decorating or listening to Christmas music? Usually Christmas music does it for me. There is this one Andy Williams record that always takes me back when I listen to it. The memory I get from putting up the tree comes from a time when my dad and I used to put it up together. Ah, the scars, the scars. Putting up the tree with dad was always an experience. One year he got a little too aggressive with the saw and hacked off so much of the trunk that we had to find a box to put the tree on so that it would be of normal height. Another time, the tree would just not sit right in the stand and the only way we could keep it from toppling over was to secure it to the fireplace mantle with some wire.

My brothers and I have lots of memories of Dad yelling at us when we put up the Christmas tree. It was an artificial tree, and it had a specific method of assembly. Evidently, we were 'stupid'...or at least that's what we were told.

A lot of my memories involve the train track set up that took over 1/3 of the living room, and of course any mention of the Sears Wish Book. Visits with rarely seen relatives were always fun because usually cookies were involved.

One year I had my Christmas list completed in September or October I loved the Sears book, and would spend hours pouring over all the toys. I'd make lists every year, but I usually didn't get anything off of it. I remember asking for the same item like 4 years in a row...never got it.
