It's not that I don't understand them...it's that it's just not rational to have these sorts of problems.
Example: "rigidly staying on topic."
Human beings are not robots, and when we have conversations, they flow like water, meandering from one topic to another
I get staying focused. Truly. Gotcha. And I understand when there's a serious discussion going on (not really possible on some message boards) that off-topic banter isn't welcome. There is a time and a place for focus, and it's a very good, and necessary, thing.
But.
Once a topic has been exhausted, at least for the moment, why do some absolutely lose their mind if the posts begin to meander? That's how conversation works in real life; why should it be any different on a message board? The best conversation happens...watch me now...organically, flowing from one topic to the next seamlessly.
Can you imagine being at a social gathering, and having someone standing there, policing the conversations going on, telling everyone "Hey! You were talking about pie recipes, and pie recipes YOU SHALL DISCUSS!!"...?
It's manifest silliness.

Here's something else I don't get...
Why do people get bent out of shape because two (or more) people are arguing about something...? If the topic no longer interests you, or the discussion, or whatever, why is it incumbent upon these whiners to complain? There are...literally, now...THOUSANDS of other threads that can be visited, but some choose to control the behavior of others by insisting that others post according to their own view.
Again...moderation in all things, true...but if two people want to argue until the cows come home, why is it so distressing to some people that they have to make an issue out of it...? If it interests THEM...and provided it hasn't become personal...who cares...?
And then, since it is an impossibility of physics to have an argument with only a single person, why is it frequently only ONE person who is...watch me now...singled out?
It is manifest silliness.

I've seen forums moderated where if you post after yourself, that's a reprimand. Could even be weeks or months later. I don't understand that nonsense. For instance, a journal.... that would be ridiculous.

While I agree with you, I'm thinking the person(s) expressing annoyance might wish to post on the topic and fear getting drawn into an argument themselves. I've been in that situation(but not annoyed . I think some either want to see a point resolved or a new idea brought forth and if the two "arguees" aren't doing either, then it can be frustrating to watch or listen to. In real life if a conversation is of interest I'll sometimes play Devil's Advocate and ask questions challenging a premise in order to learn more of another pov. Rhetorical questions sometimes work well to drive a conversation, but not so well on a message board I've found.

For instance, a journal.... that would be ridiculous. I was on a board back around 2003/4 and the admin would actually remove post counts as a punishment. In one case, a bunch of us were getting silly and posting some OT stuff. Mind you, nothing nasty or offensive, just general tomfoolery and we all got several hundred posts removed from our counts. Can't imagine having your head stuck so far up your own ass that you actually discipline folks for something like that.

It's beyond me. As has been stated several times, you cannot control the flow of conversation. Everyone has an idea or opinion and not allowing some form of OT just kills the ability to create camaraderie and friendship.

In some cases, the post-count number imbues some people with a false sense of competition. Over at the CGC board, I suggested getting rid of the number, keep the "titles", but have the "TOTAL NEWBIE" cap at like, 25K posts so no matter how many posts after that you have, all anyone knows is that you have more than 25K. That way, there's no race to get to the next level and we don't have to suffer through several thousand -posts.

If you say ANYTHING that isn't 100% in line with what everyone else wants/thinks...BANNED...immediately. So funny. People get banned for liking CGC over CBCS. People get banned because they say Hulk could beat up Superman. LMAO!
