Christopher Mellon, a previous Deputy Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, has publicly called for the US government to disclose details of a "reverse engineering project" related to UFOs.

In an opinion piece, Mellon noted that he had referred four witnesses to the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), all of whom had direct knowledge about the covert "black" government program. This program is said to deal with the "analysis and exploitation of materials recovered from off-world craft." Furthermore, he indicated that other sources have approached him regarding an "alleged secret US government reverse engineering program."

Mellon laid out several arguments in favor of publicizing any information related to these supposed projects. He emphasized the American people’s "right to know the truth" regarding government activities relating to reverse engineering of UFOs. He added that the public "can handle" any data related to extraterrestrial crafts.

In addition to these points, Mellon said scientific advantages could occur from unveiling such information. He argued that involving "our best and brightest minds" in their evaluation could lead to significant advancements for the world. As he put it, "Assuming UAP propulsion technology is distinct from anything known to the public, a successful reverse engineering program might bring about a revolution in energy, transportation, and materials technologies. We might be able to accelerate a transition to clean and cheap energy; perhaps even develop superconducting materials and propulsion technologies that are now the stuff of Hollywood movies."
