Like most of you, I have been following this situation very closely for a while now. I've shared my opinions and shared in all of your concern with what is going on. I have 31 CGC SS slabs in the new case and 41 more at CGC so obviously I'm a bit upset and nervous. I'm going to admit that all the panic on the forums has probably led to me overreacting a bit. Before you burn me at the stake, I acknowledge there are problems. I emailed Brittany yesterday and received a response from her tonight at 9:30pm PST. It's been said before and it's worth saying again, she does great work. I did tell her that an official statement from her or a CGC representative would probably go a long way. Harshen's defiant response only made her job harder. Kudos to Brittany for working overtime on this. Her response encouraged me to put some work in of my own.
I carefully evaluated my 31 slabs and here are my conclusions:
- Everything in the new holder appears to be held in place on the sides and is a little loose in the middle. This can cause a slight wavy appearance. Brittany said she's seen a lot of raw books at Denver Comic Con that don't lay completely flat. If they aren't flat raw, they won't lay flat in the holder.
- Of the 31 books, I'd say 17 of them are fine. They aren't perfect, there is that looseness in the middle, there are newton rings on some (we're never going to completely get rid of them), but for the most part, they look pretty good. The new case has great visibility and I was easily able to see some of the defects that led to me earning the grades I did. That is a very nice positive.
- Hey, we want 100% satisfaction on these, but if more than half are ok, maybe it's not as bad as it seems. Taking a step back, Harshen's response, the relative CGC silence, and the deletion of threads and posts are contributing to the hysteria more than the case itself
- I come with evidence! I took pictures of the 14 books that I would consider sending back for reholdering. The waves are mostly pretty subtle, you can judge for yourself. There are some example of newton rings, but I didn't really focus on them
-It's probably worth noting that my first submission of 5 books all had issues of some kind. Second submission had 3 of 9 with issues and the third had 7 of 17 with issues. These are MINOR issues, but we are finicky collectors so obviously the sky is falling. Before you make me walk the plank, I acknowledge I've seen people with issues far worse than mine.
Take a look at the pictures and judge for yourself (I sound like an eBay seller), and let's all try to not get too caught up in the hysteria (myself included)
