First Official Acknowledgement of Newton Ring Problem
CGC LinkCGC has received inquires about the "rainbow effect" that has been observed on some of the new CGC holders more than others. We have also closely followed the comments in this thread and wanted to respond. The rainbow effect is a natural occurrence caused by light refracting through two different pieces of plastic, much like a prism. We previously posted a more complete explanation which is: "What you’re seeing is called the rainbow or prism effect. There is no liquid present, or anything that can damage your book. It is what happens sometimes when light passes through plastics with different refractive indexes — which means how they bend light. It’s what you sometimes see on an smartphone screen protector, or on the edges of an LCD television screen. In CGC’s case, it’s the refractive qualities of the hard outer shell and the archival-quality Mylar sheets over the book, which have been approved by the Library of Congress for the preservation of paper." This same rainbow effect is seen on many products made of plastic and was present on the previous version of the CGC holder. It is not damage or liquid and does not affect the preservation of your books. We do realize that presentation is nearly as important as preservation. We have therefore taken steps to minimize the presence of the rainbow effect in the new CGC holders and we continue to work internally and with outside consultants and vendors to further reduce the rainbow effect. We will post further updates on our New New CGC Holder PageIf you have any questions or concerns about the rainbow effect, please do not hesitate to contact CGC Customer Service at 1-877-662-6642 or submissions@cgccomics.com. If you are referencing a specific CGC-encapsulated book, please be sure to provide pictures. Here is a book that displayed the rainbow effect, and the same book depicting the results we have taken to minimize this.
