New Case Discussion Thread (Sequential Examples)

After posting several days ago, we wanted to follow up with an update on our fix of the newton effect on the new holders, and offer some insight into the situation. As mentioned earlier, once we became aware of the extent of the newton effect on some holders we made it our #1 priority to isolate and solve the issue. I'm happy to say we did find a solution that mitigated the effect, and that solution was implemented last week.

We want to thank everyone who has provided valuable feedback over the last month. We are very proud of the new holder and all the things it has fixed or improved. Our main concern with the new design was safely securing the book in place. We did extensive testing to make sure this change would be successful, including drop tests and shipping tests. The sturdier design to accomplish this also resulted in a case that can withstand impacts that cause considerably less damage to the holder while protecting the book. Clarity was another goal we pushed to improve, again running extensive tests to maximize that aspect. We ran heat, water and air tests on the new holder design, using outside sources to analyse the results. We also solicited input from a select number of dealers concerning our new label design, which was very helpful, and several of their points were taken into consideration during the its finalization. Towards the end of production, a number of people were chosen to view the holder for feedback.

Some of you are wondering how the newton effect escaped all of this testing. The truth is we made a slight change shortly before the launch that proved to be critical to the assembly of the holder, but unfortunately augmented the effect on some books. Once we began to investigate the matter, we discovered the extent of the newton effect throughout many industries, and the extensive patents and processes created to mitigate it. I also began to review many of CGC's old holders here at the office, and was very surprised to see how prevalent it was. In my 16 years of assessing comics in CGC holders, I honestly never gave it a second thought. I then pulled out some old Fortress holders from the '90s, which also exhibited the newton effect. Apparently this effect has been around the hobby for decades. Unfortunately some of our new holders displaying excessive newton got out the past four weeks, which has brought this effect to the forefront of discussion.

With such a huge overhaul in design, we anticipated hiccups, and vowed to deal with them swiftly and effectively. For anyone who has received new holders that exhibit excessive newton effect, we will reholder those books for free and return them to you immediately. So, if I'm reading this correctly, the effect is still there but has been mitigated.

And the mitigation was implemented for books graded 4/25/16 and later.

My 16 were the exact same way. The waves are WAY worse than any newton rings. Those are aesthetic...the waves are a totally different beast. I need to find time to go over my story soon. I'm working 12-14 hour days right now. I have another 21 that are showing up on Friday.

Just got a batch of 10 back from CSG today.
All had some degree of "Newton'ing" -- some more than others
