i saw the post at the time, and the link, and intended to watch it for self education. when i went back to do so, it had disappeared.
i would not doubt the increases hypothesis. when one thinks about it, almost all other sources of trade/economic gain were cut off by the un. the only thing left, which was to big an undertaking to stop, without bringing china and india and turkey to the non-recoverable brink of all out war, was the opium and mj market and the arms black market. i personally do not have any respect for the nation building/government building interference of the un. they do so with impertinence and favored nation intent, based on their own survival, and keeping a foot on the displaced countries/people of the world.
having said that, id o not completely dismiss their health and children's welfare organizations, but why, do they always have to do so with a military presence that is more threatening than helpful and always under the guise of peacekeeping missions, when in fact 9 out of 10 times, it causes escalation and more suffering. it is the actions of a self perpetuating never ending politically motivating and prejudiced body that makes decisions that support their own existence. if they were successful in their past missions, there would be no need for many of their self proclaimed pursuits. communism and federal republics/democratic governments do not have the same agenda. why pretend they do?
on the subject of the hmong, i will always be grateful to them. general vang pao would be a hero in the u.s, with status equal to washington and patton, for his resistance and for saving so many u.s. military lives, even though in many instances, it was not even known for years what they accomplished. the vc and nva had bounties on them, in no small part to the hmong interdiction on the ho chi minh trail.... the hmong screwed up one hell of a lot of communist plans and military movement.
as to your friends, their dad was most likely a chieftain/high ranking officer appointed by the vang pao military hierarchy, and loyal to vang pao (it is probable they would not be here otherwise). the bowing is the deepest form of respect, and there are really 2 different bows, one with a pronounced bow with hands extended and together.... a recognition of warrior status, and a bow to direct family members, which is for recognition of the status of the warrior. it is still practiced. the hmong are still persecuted. their minority status in viet nam is questioned to this day as to their loyalty. they are still hunted in laos, and are persecuted. the u.s. does not do nearly enough to return the loyalty and sacrifice of the hmong on behalf of the u.s., and red china views the hmong in the same vein as they do catholics and muslims.
i have said enough on the subject.

btw, we need a heck of a lot more active people on this board. i re-invited and restated your invitation on the cgc thread. i sure hope they give it a try. free thinkers need a place for spirited and interesting conversation, without the bs moderation.

Thanks for telling others. There have been a few reasons why people who have come here have left, but for conversation about comics or anything else this place is wide open. Moderation is easy. No F-bombs, no making threats, no nekkid people, no starting new threads about Steely Dan.

i have said enough on the subject. That was all great.
We actually used to be allowed to discuss stuff like this in the Watercooler. Even as recently as a few years ago we were discussing the Russia investigation.
I hope more come over but I don't think they're going to.

don't know what is going on over there, but 19 hours of silence, followed by 3 hours of silence, followed by 6 hours of silence, followed by 2-1/2 hours of silence.
with all those experts on cv19, there sure is a lot of silence. it is almost like the people that are there can not think for themselves, or think of something to say. of course i realize that 13 members are deliberately not posting, but still, that leaves 7 or so that usually post like they are employed by encyclopedia britannica.
maybe they all have cv19 and it has damaged their fingers.

Ladies and gentlemen, in one week's time, the rematch you demanded! The Lemmings vs. The Weasel in the rodent showdown of the year! The fur will fly as the mental midgets vie! We'll sell you the whole seat, but you'll only need the edge!

"Speak" vs the weak. Fangs will be bared and you'll be so scared. And as a bonus Wacky Mole's entrance music will be "Muskrat Love" so get ready to get down, underground, sundown.

On the contrary my good man! Both boys had a full day of online school. We have a Chinese type fold out divider we put between them and I sit perpendicular to that where I can watch them both. I monitor them and answer any questions they have, but there is a decent amount of down time to watch MST3K on Twitch and post on the boards

Curious if you’ve ever noticed either receiving instructions or info that you didn’t get in school? I’m always curious about what may have changed from before. I’d love to sit in on some classrooms if such a thing were ever possible.
