In terms of ability;
Dave Mustaine or Kirk Hammett?

In terms of ability; Dave Mustaine or Kirk Hammett? Kirk Hammett as he can actually play a decent solo. Dave Mustaine is a great song writer but lacks Hammett's overall ability to play guitar like a true great.

Mustaines's guitar work seems to have more musical knowledge applied to it- To me, Hammett often sounds like he's just stacking scales on top of each other- Especially in the older stuff. Also, I think Metallica had better songs, though Hammett probably just contributed riffs that Ulrich and Hetfield would later refine. Nutshell, I'd rather watch and listen to a Mustaine solo. That voice, though, That's why it's called "personal taste".

I'm not a musician, so I'm not really qualified to suggest one's ability is greater than the other, but from a fan perspective through the early 90's I'd go with Hammett. I certainly listened to significantly more Hammett than Mustaine, and my favorite album from either is Master Of Puppets from which Hammett had quite a few song writing credits.

Same here, I am in no position to judge anyone's guitar skills past "I like this guy more than this guy". And I've never been a Megadeth fan, so Hammet it is!

Hammett, if for no other reason than he's a huge Alex Lifeson fan

I guess Hammett thought so too. Aside from using his art, Kirk played guitar on a Septic Death track back in the 80's.

Sorry, Siggy. Looks like you're outvoted Nah, it just means I need to ask someone who knows what they're talking about Metallica songs were better (until after … And Justice For All. Maybe the Black Album), but musically I think Megadeth was more imaginative. I thought Metallica needed him [back] and Mustaine needed Metallica. Mustaine also needed someone else on the Mic. Anyone else. For me, one of the biggest What If's? in music is What If Dave Mustaine Didn't "Use" his way out of Metallica?

I don't think I've ever seen Mustaine use a wah-wah pedal.
