I never had the impression people liked this film, but I love it! Great concept (could use a little tweaking here an there). Me and some friends saw it in the theater. We had just filled the van with smoke in the parking lot (ala Jeff Spicoli), and floated in. I was too wasted and having a hard time. Just as I thought I was starting to 'maintain', a scene designed to jump start (or stop) the heart worked perfectly, and, along with Carpenter's synthesized sound effects, just about did be in. The problem was I was breathing too shallow, and that's a leading factor in panic attacks. I've learned that if I ever feel something like a panic attack (whether the van is filled with smoke, or not), I just take deep regular breaths. Within a minute I start feeling better. Gotta remember to flush the Co2 out of the deeper parts of your lungs. Anyway, I had to come back the next night to see it again because I missed too much

John Carpenter scarred me for life with 1982's The Thing. I was six when I first saw that movie

One of the first DVDs I watched with my wife. She thought it was the Dracula movie and got a bit of a shock.

The progression of the shared dream was very well done. Yes that was a good feature of the movie. I remember there was a rumour that they cut the original ending. When Brian touched the mirror, Catherine was supposed to have come back through it. The rumour was it was cut because Carpenter didn't want a "happy ending". Probably just bollocks.

But if not, he made the right choice. The ending leaves the story wide open. I always hoped he's do a sequel. My biggest disappointment was... {Spoiler}...after seeing the Father of Satan's hand slowly being pulled free, that was it. I wanted to see what that frickin' hand was attached to.

+1, but I never saw the sequel. For some reason I don't trust it, and I don't want to tarnish the first one.
