This is a new one:
I've never, in 19 years on eBay, had someone ask me this. Ever.
What foreign buyer isn't aware that they have to pay customs fees?
I suspect it's the GSP that has accustomed buyers to "hidden" customs fees.
My response:
"Hi! Sorry you had to pay a customs fee that you weren't aware of. However, that isn't anything we have control over, and is charged by the country you live in (in this case, Canada), It is the responsibility of the buyer to be aware of and pay whatever taxes, customs, and other fees are charged by the gov't. We don't have any control over any of that.
I hope you are otherwise satisfied with the book and the packaging. Thank you for your business!"

The buyer's response:
Sounds a tad ominous, but I suspect nothing will come of it.
..."well beyond what was needed"...?
Isn't that the point?

The buyer's response: Sounds a tad ominous, but I suspect nothing will come of it. ..."well beyond what was needed"...? Isn't that the point? Low feedback? I can understand if they were a first time International buyer, but otherwise how can they not know? And hopefully that was just an odd choice of words, and not some, "instead of overkill packaging, you could concentrate on teaching your customers the 'ins and outs' of their laws and customs."

Yeah, "1" feedback, though he says "I've never paid it on any eBay purchase"...so, either he's never paid it on a tiny handful, if not just the one, or he's got another account. Either way, it's silly.

And having had countless tens of thousands (yes...tens of thousands) of books damaged through eBay because of ty packaging over the years, I'll take "overkill packing" every day and all day Sunday. I've now added a customs disclaimer to all my listings. Never underestimate the ability of dumb people to make things difficult for everyone else.

Speaking of, I thought this was amusing: If you "hate haggling", why are you haggling...? Apparently, you don't hate it that much! The potential buyer HAS MY ASKING PRICES, he KNOWS what I want. When I ask him what HIS response to those unambiguous prices is, he says he "hates haggling", and then haggles. No, what he really wants is to be non-committal, and force me to make the offer...which I fully understand....but hide under the "I don't like to haggle" fib. If you don't want to haggle, you'd already have hit the BIN on all of them. Too funny. People are funny.

Here's my philosophy on selling comics on eBay:
I set the price at what I think is FMV, at the top end. Some stuff, sure, I really don't want to sell, but most stuff, I set the price at about what they've been selling for, and add a little cushion. Say something has a 90 day average of $200, I'll set the price at $223 or somesuch, and accept $190 almost always.
It's why I don't like "package deals"...because, almost always, someone else will come along and buy it at, or close to, my asking price, if it's FMV. Selling it to someone else for 25%...or more...off FMV doesn't make any sense in that scenario.
It's not that I don't recognize the value of package deals...but, for them to work for ME, you need to buy at least ONE item at MY price (BIN or offer), for me to be willing to do better on additional items.
That said, if I can combine shipping, I'll always be willing to knock those additional charges.
But if I have 3 items for $225, and GPA is $200 for each....I'm not going to take $450 for all three, when I can get $200 from three different buyers. The difference is quite substantial.
If I were one of those con dealers, charging 20-50% above GPA, then sure, I'll give you that 35% discount...it all washes out the same.

My post in Boozads CGC thread shows the lengths I go to make sure whatever high grade book that is purchased arrives the same way. Many things can go wrong in the space between you releasing a package and the buyer receiving it. If damaged goods are headaches I can avoid with a little effort, then I make the effort. There's nothing like glowing feedback

Can I tell you how INCREDIBLY AWESOME it is to have a bunch of people make lowball offers on a book, and then hardsell you about how good their offers are, and how they're not a dealer, and then someone comes along and makes an offer 10% higher than YOUR OWN previous highest COUNTER offer...? That is so awesome. (In this case, people were offering $375-$425 for an NYX #3, and my last counters were all $440, and then someone came along and made an offer of $485. SOLD!)

I wouldn't know the feeling, but I bet it's pretty good.
