Some of his solos really needed a wah pedal, if you know what I mean...?

I was thinking the opposite. Mustaines's guitar work seems to have more musical knowledge applied to it- To me, Hammett often sounds like he's just stacking scales on top of each other- Especially in the older stuff. Also, I think Metallica had better songs, though Hammett probably just contributed riffs that Ulrich and Hetfield would later refine. Nutshell, I'd rather watch and listen to a Mustaine solo. That voice, though, That's why it's called "personal taste". I agree. One could argue Hammett's scale stacking comes as a result of playing his instrument properly. He learnt from the best... Joe Satriani. Mustaine on the other hand once claimed to have invented some new chords. No, Dave, you didn't. You're just not playing them correctly.
In terms of accredited song writing, I'll agree Mustaine has the upper hand. It's his band based on his ideas. In terms of ability, it's Hammett. It's a shame Hammett's song writing ability doesn't show more in Metallica. He wrote the main riff for Enter Sandman however appears third on the credits.

Sorry, Siggy. Looks like you're outvoted Nah, it just means I need to ask someone who knows what they're talking about Metallica songs were better (until after … And Justice For All. Maybe the Black Album), but musically I think Megadeth was more imaginative. I thought Metallica needed him [back] and Mustaine needed Metallica. Mustaine also needed someone else on the Mic. Anyone else. For me, one of the biggest What If's? in music is What If Dave Mustaine Didn't "Use" his way out of Metallica?Metallica with Mustaine would not have produced Master of Puppets and they'd now be co-headlining the Thrash Legends circuit with Testament.
Megadeth seem to have done a great job in mirroring Metallica's career, just at a lower level. If you compare their first five albums in parallel, the only Megadeth album that stands out is Rust in Peace. Beyond that it's all just a mess for both bands. Youthanasia was a deviation; Cryptic Bitings was Megadeth's Load. The best they've achieved since is substandard (but the same can be said of Metallica).
Don't get me wrong here... I love Megadeth. Anything up to Youthanasia, that is. I'd rather listen to Countdown than the Black Album. It's just that in terms of ability and song writing Metallica have (had) it sown up.

I checked the pantry and my bottle of catsup says “ketchup” on the label, so I guess it’s the latter as that’s what I bought.
